Great Depression In Romania
The Great Depression ( ro, Marea Criză Economică or, rarely, ) of 1929–1933, which affected the whole world, had several consequences in the Kingdom of Romania. Romania had been among the winner countries of World War I. It received several new territories (Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania), with many natural resources. However, the war caused heavy human and economic losses to the country. Romania had to fight inflation and the non-convertibility of its currency, the Romanian leu (lei in plural). Romania then had a fundamentally agrarian economy, with agriculture accounting for 63.2% of the national production. The Great Depression affected Romania on several ways. For example, in 1933, the net national income was of 172,614,000,000 lei, only 62% of that of 1929, which was of 275,180,000,000 lei. Mircea Mureșan
Mircea Mureșan (11 November 1928 – 24 April 2020) was a Romanian film director. He directed 22 films between 1961 and 2004. Mureșan won the prize for Best First Work at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival for the film '' Răscoala''. Born in Sibiu, he attended from 1939 to 1947 the Gheorghe Lazăr High School in his native city. He then played at the State Theatre of Sibiu for four years, after which he went to Bucharest to pursue his studies, graduating from the Institute of Film I.L. Caragiale in 1955. His film career, which began with film adaptations, gradually reoriented towards comedy, with rare trips into documentaries. From 1974 to 1989 Mureșan was vice-president of the Romanian Filmmakers Association. He was married to actress . The Mayor of Bucharest ( ro, Primarul General al Municipiului București), sometimes known as the General Mayor, is the head of the Bucharest City Hall in Bucharest, Romania, which is responsible for citywide affairs, such as the water system, the transport system and the main boulevards. The title of General Mayor is sometimes used to distinguish the office from that of the mayors that lead each of Bucharest's six administrative sectors, and which are responsible for local area affairs, such as secondary streets, parks, schools and cleaning services. Ion Dincă (November 3, 1928 – January 9, 2007) was a Romanian communist politician and Army general who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Mayor of Bucharest under the Communist regime. Born in Cobia, Dâmbovița County, in 1947, he moved to Făgăraș, where he worked as a lathe machinist at Nitramonia company, also joining the Romanian Communist Party. He graduated from two military academies, and in 1968, he was named a military adviser of the president and deputy of the Military Department of the Central Committee, in charge with Internal Affairs, State Security, Justice and the prosecutor's office. Joining the Communist Party in 1947, between 1969 and 1989, he was a member of the Central Committee and between 1976 and 1989, he was a member of the Executive Political Committee, being in charge with Industry, Agriculture and Constructions. Elie Wiesel (, born Eliezer Wiesel ''Eliezer Vizel''; September 30, 1928 – July 2, 2016) was a Romanian-born American writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Peace Prize, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor. He authored Elie Wiesel bibliography, 57 books, written mostly in French and English, including ''Night (memoir), Night'', a work based on his experiences as a Jewish prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Constantin Corduneanu (July 26, 1928 – December 26, 2018) was a Romanian-American mathematician and professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2015, he was elected a titular member of the Romanian Academy; he was a corresponding member of the Academy since 1974.
