Canadian Division (NHL)
The NHL's Canadian Division was formed after expansion in 1926. The division existed for 12 seasons until 1938. Despite its name, the division contained at least one team based in the United States throughout its existence. During its run as a separate division, when considered as a whole the Canadian Division was the slightly less successful of the league's two divisions, winning five Stanley Cup championships compared with seven won by the American Division. Under the cross-over playoff format then in use, Canadian Division teams contested just one intra-divisional Finals, compared to three such series played by American Division teams. Notably however, Canadian teams won all twelve division titles and were the only teams from the division to reach the Finals during this time, also, each of the four Canadian teams then in existence won the Cup at least once. Leo Reise
Leopold Adolph Emile Reise, Sr. (June 1, 1892 – July 8, 1975) was a Canadian hockey player who played 8 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Hamilton Tigers, New York Americans and New York Rangers. Prior to turning professional in 1920 he played several years for the amateur Hamilton Tigers, joining the professional version when they started and staying for four seasons. He also spent three seasons with the Saskatoon Crescents of the Western Canada Hockey League, and returned to the NHL in 1926 with the New York Americans, spending four seasons with them before finishing his time in the NHL with the New York Rangers. Reise spent two additional seasons in the minor International Hockey League before retiring in 1932. His son, Leo Reise, Jr., would also play in the NHL. Norman Lawrence Himes (April 13, 1900 — September 14, 1958) was a Canadian ice hockey player and professional golfer. Himes played 402 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Americans between 1926 and 1935. The 1927–28 Montreal Maroons season was the 4th season for the National Hockey League franchise. They went against the Canadiens in the second round and won 3 goals to 2, or 3–2. The 2nd game was a reversal of fortune from previous year against Montreal Canadiens, when Howie Morenz eliminated them with an overtime goal. This year it was Maroons Russell Oatman who provided the margin of victory, at 8:10 of overtime, to upset the 1st place Canadiens. Montreal Maroons
The Montreal Maroons (officially the Montreal Professional Hockey Club) were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL). They played in the NHL from 1924 to 1938, winning the Stanley Cup in 1926 and 1935. They were the last non-Original Six team to win the Stanley Cup until the expansion Philadelphia Flyers won in 1974. Founded as a team for the English community in Montreal, they shared their home city with the Canadiens, who eventually came under the same ownership as the Maroons but were intended to appeal to the French Canadian population. The 1927–28 Ottawa Senators season was the club's 11th season in the NHL, 43rd overall. Ottawa qualified for the playoffs to try to win their second-straight Stanley Cup; however, they were eliminated by the Montreal Maroons in a two-game total-goals series, losing by a combined score of 3–1. Regular season The Senators were playing in by far the smallest market in the league, and were having problems financially due to escalating expenses. Part of the problem for the Senators was they had problems drawing fans against the expansion US teams, and as a result, they would play two "home" games in Detroit, collecting the bulk of the gate receipts. The Senators would be led offensively by Frank Finnigan, who scored 20 goals and 25 points, both team highs, while 20-year-old Hec Kilrea would have a 23 point season. The Ottawa Senators were an ice hockey team based in Ottawa, which existed from 1883 to 1954. The club was the first hockey club in Ontario, a founding member of the National Hockey League (NHL) and played in the NHL from 1917 until 1934. The 1927–28 Detroit Cougars season was the second season of the Detroit, Michigan National Hockey League (NHL) franchise later known as the Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit Cougars scored 44 points, finishing fourth in the American Division and failing to make the playoffs in their sophomore year. 1927–28 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1927–28 Chicago Black Hawks season was the team's second season of play. Regular season The team was coming off a 19–22–3 expansion season, however, team owner Frederic McLaughlin saw it as a disappointment, and fired head coach Pete Muldoon. He was replaced by Barney Stanley. The team would score only 68 goals, 3rd fewest in the league, and allow a league high 134, and finish with a 7–34–3 record, dead last in the NHL. Midway through the season, the Hawks fired Stanley and named Hugh Lehman, who was the backup goaltender, as the team's head coach. Injuries played a big part in the Hawks horrible season, as Babe Dye, who scored a team high 25 goals the previous year, would suit up for only 9 games and get no points.
