1927 Kenyan General Election
General elections were held in Kenya Colony on 12 February 1927. Campaign Reports before the election noted that of the eleven White people in Kenya, white seats, five were uncontested with the incumbent returned unopposed, one was likely to be uncontested and the remaining five would be contested. Kenya Colony
The Colony and Protectorate of Kenya, commonly known as British Kenya or British East Africa, was part of the British Empire in Africa. It was established when the former East Africa Protectorate was transformed into a British Crown colony in 1920. Technically, the "Colony of Kenya" referred to the interior lands, while a 16 km (10 mi) coastal strip, nominally on lease from the Sultan of Zanzibar, was the "Protectorate of Kenya", but the two were controlled as a single administrative unit. The colony came to an end in 1963 when an ethnic Kenyan majority government was elected for the first time and eventually declared independence as the Republic of Kenya. Elections in Kenya take place within the framework of a multi-party democracy and a presidential system. The President, Senate and National Assembly are directly elected by voters, with elections organised by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Electoral history Nationwide elections have taken place in Kenya since 1920, when the first elections to the Legislative Council were held. The legislature initially had 11 elected Europeans and three members appointed to represent Indians and Arabs, together with a number of nominated officials. By the next elections in 1924, suffrage had been extended to Indians and Arabs, with five seats given to the Indian community and one to the Arabs, as well as one seat appointed to represent the majority African population. Walter Huggard
Sir Walter Clarence Huggard QC (d. 21 June 1957) was a British barrister, acting High Commissioner for the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland and Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements. Education Sir Walter was educated at Methodist College Belfast and Dublin University where he was First Honourman and Senior Moderator in Legal and Political Science. He received an LLD and was called to the Bar at King's Inn in 1907. Career In 1914 he became a magistrate in Nigeria and in 1920 was appointed Solicitor General for Trinidad and Tobago. Huggard took silk in 1921. The following year he became Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago and was Attorney General for the Kenya Colony from 1926–29 (a position which also gave him a seat in the Legislative Council) and Attorney General for the Straits Settlements from 1929–33.
