1927 Hartford Giants Season
The 1927 Hartford Giants season was their fourth and final season in existence. The team played the prior season as the Hartford Blues of the National Football League. However, after the 1926 season, the NFL's owners voted to cut down the number of teams from 22 to 12. As a result, Hartford's franchise was eliminated. Blues' owner George Mulligan reorganized the team into a semi-pro ''Semi-Pro'' is a 2008 American sports comedy film. Vincent Lacava
Dr. Vincent D. Lacava was a semi-professional football coach and general manager in 1927 for the Hartford Giants. The team had previously been known as the Hartford Blues and played in the National Football League, the year prior. However after the Blues' 1926 season, the NFL's owners voted to streamline the league and cut back from 22 to 12 teams. As a result, half of the 1926 NFL teams were scrapped, including Hartford. So in 1927, Blues' owner George Mulligan created the Hartford Giants, a semi-pro team with many of the players from the Blues, however the Giants folded after the season. East Hartford Velodrome
The East Hartford Velodrome was a velodrome in East Hartford, Connecticut. In its three-year lifespan, it hosted football and boxing events before it was demolished in 1929. The Hartford Blues played their 1926 and 1927 seasons at the velodrome, a then-new bicycle track located across the Connecticut River in East Hartford. The grass football field barely fit inside the wooden track. Its capacity was 8,000 spectators. Clarkin Field
Morgan G. Bulkeley Stadium was a sporting event stadium located in Hartford, Connecticut and the site of Babe Ruth's final exhibition baseball game. The facility was home to the Eastern League's Hartford Senators, the Hartford Blues of the National Football League, and included a mile dirt oval for motor sports. Originally named Clarkin Field from 1921–1927, the stadium was renamed for former Connecticut Governor and First President of the National League, Morgan Bulkeley in 1928. James H. Clarkin, owner of the Hartford Senators, replaced the old Wethersfield Avenue Baseball Grounds (also sometimes called Clarkin Field or Clarkin's Field) with the new Clarkin Field in 1921. George Mulligan
George F. Mulligan (1880–1955) was the leading sports promoter in Connecticut during the early 1900s. He was also the founder and owner of the Hartford Blues of the National Football League. The Blues, which were referred to as the Waterbury Blues, began as a semi-pro football team in 1924, before joining the early NFL in 1926. Boxing Mulligan operated professional boxing clubs in Hartford and Waterbury, Connecticut. He promoted three world championship boxing matches. The first was the Joe Lynch–Pete Herman bantamweight championship bout in 1919 in Waterbury. The second was the 1925 featherweight championship match between Kid Kaplan and Babe Herman in Waterbury.
