1927 Grand Prix Season
The 1927 Grand Prix season was the third (and final) AIACR World Manufacturers' Championship season and the second run to a 1.5-litre engine limit. In a dominant display, the championship was won by Delage, with team driver Robert Benoist winning four of the five Grand Prix. The championship opened with the Indianapolis 500 – once again a contest between Duesenberg and Miller engines. Previous year's winner Frank Lockhart started on pole position and led for over half the race until his car suffered a broken con-rod. Rookie George Souders, driving Peter DePaolo’s 1925 race-winning Duesenberg, came through and took a comfortable victory with an eight lap margin. DePaolo went on to secure the season's AAA Championship with three wins and four second places. Ardennes
The Ardennes (french: Ardenne ; nl, Ardennen ; german: Ardennen; wa, Årdene ; lb, Ardennen ), also known as the Ardennes Forest or Forest of Ardennes, is a region of extensive forests, rough terrain, rolling hills and ridges primarily in Belgium and Luxembourg, extending into Germany and France. Circuito Lasarte
The Circuito Lasarte was an Grand Prix motor racing road course at Lasarte-Oria, Guipúzcoa, Spain in the Basque Country near the city of San Sebastián on the Bay of Biscay. The counterclockwise layout was used between 1923 and 1935 but racing ended with the eruption of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and after the war auto racing resumed at new tracks near Barcelona. The Circuito Lasarte played host to the San Sebastian Grand Prix, Spanish Grand Prix and the 1926 European Grand Prix. No longer operational for auto racing, in 1965 the layout was used for the World Cycling Championship. Spanish Grand Prix
The Spanish Grand Prix ( es, Gran Premio de España, ca, Gran Premi d'Espanya) is a Formula One motor racing event currently held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The race is one of the oldest in the world still contested, celebrating its centenary in 2013. The race had modest beginnings as a production car race. Interrupted by the World War I, First World War, the race waited a decade for its second running before becoming a staple of the European calendar. In 1927 it was part of the 1927 Grand Prix season, World Manufacturers' Championship; it was promoted to the European Championship (auto racing), European Championship in 1935 before the Spanish Civil War brought an end to racing. The 1927 French Grand Prix (formally the XXI Grand Prix de l'A.C.F.) was a Grand Prix motor race held at Montlhèry on 3 July 1927. The race was held over 48 laps of a 12.50 km course for a total distance of 600.00 km and was won by Robert Benoist driving a Delage. Background The World Championship was carried out for the third time in 1927. The regulations remained more or less the same as in 1926 with minor changes reported for the 1927 World Championship. On October 27, 1926, the AIACR & CSI debated at their Paris meetings the regulations and announced for 1927 that the 1.5-liter formula would remain only until the end of 1927 because of the bad experiences made so far, to be relieved with the free formula for 1928. Robert Benoist
Robert Marcel Charles Benoist (20 March 1895 – 14 September 1944) was a French Grand Prix motor racing driver and war hero. Early life Born near Rambouillet, Île-de-France, France, Robert Benoist was the son of Baron Henri de Rothschild's gamekeeper. As a young man, Benoist served during World War I in the French infantry, then as a fighter pilot in the new ''Armée de l'Air'' and ultimately as a flying instructor. Grand Prix driver Looking for excitement in the post-war world, Benoist joined the ''de Marçay'' car company as a test driver. He then moved on to Salmson and was very successful in cyclecar races before being signed to drive for Delage in 1924. The next year, teamed with Albert Divo, he won the French Grand Prix in the race that claimed the life of Italian racing star Antonio Ascari. Autodrome de Montlhéry (established 4 October 1924) is a motor racing circuit, officially called L’autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry, owned by Utac, located south-west of the small town of Montlhéry about south of Paris. History Industrialist Alexandre Lamblin hired René Jamin to design the oval shaped track for up to vehicles at . It was initially called Autodrome Parisien, and had especially high banking. The French Grand Prix (french: Grand Prix de France), formerly known as the Grand Prix de l'ACF (Automobile Club de France), is an auto race held as part of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile's annual Formula One World Championship. It is one of the oldest motor races in the world as well as the first "Grand Prix". It ceased shortly after its centenary in with 86 races having been held, due to unfavourable financial circumstances and venues. 1927 Indianapolis 500
The 15th International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday, May 30, 1927. First-time starter George Souders won by eight laps, the largest margin since 1913. Souders became the first driver to win the full-500 mile race solo, with neither help from a relief driver, nor accompanied by a riding mechanic. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an automobile racing circuit located in Speedway, Indiana, an enclave suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana.
