John Claussen Heldt (May 2, 1900 — May 6, 1985) was an American football player and coach. After playing college football at the University of Iowa, in which he was a member of the 1921 All-Western college football team and 1922 All-Western college football team, he served as the head football coach at Ohio University in 1923. Heldt played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Columbus Tigers in 1923 and was a player-coach with the Tigers in 1926. Early life and education Heldt played on the Iowa Hawkeyes football team in 1922. Career Heldt began his football coaching career with the Ohio Bobcats football team in 1923. He left Ohio for the National Football League and played with the Columbus Tigers in one game during 1923. Heldt returned to the Tigers in 1926 and played six additional games. 1926 NFL Season
The 1926 NFL season was the seventh regular season of the National Football League. The league grew to 22 teams, a figure that would not be equaled in professional football until 1961, adding the Brooklyn Lions, the Hartford Blues, the Los Angeles Buccaneers, and the Louisville Colonels, with the Racine Tornadoes re-entering. The Cleveland Bulldogs sat out the season, the Rock Island Independents defected to the upstart American Football League, and the Rochester Jeffersons suspended operations for the final time (eventually folding in early 1928). Columbus Tigers
The Columbus Panhandles were a professional American football team based in Columbus, Ohio. The club was founded in 1901 by workers at the Panhandle shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. They were a part of the Ohio League from 1904 before folding after one season. Three years later, the team tried again, playing in the Ohio League from 1907 to 1919, not winning a championship, before becoming charter members of the American Professional Football Association (APFA) which became the National Football League (NFL). The Panhandles are credited with playing in the first NFL game against the Dayton Triangles. They have no NFL championships, but Joseph Carr, the team's owner from 1907 to 1922, is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his work as NFL president.
