1926 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1926 season of the Auckland Rugby League was its 17th. Ponsonby won the Monteith Shield, the major first grade title after defeating City Rovers in the final. Richmond won their first ever senior trophy when they won the Roope Rooster. On the last week of the season these teams met for the Stormont Shield with Ponsonby winning by 15 points to 5 over. Northcote won the B Division championship, with Kingsland winning the Stallard Cup for taking out the B division knockout competition. The representative season was dominated by a long series of trial matches to assist in selecting the New Zealand team to tour England. Athletic club name change At the annual general meeting of the Athletic Rugby League Football Club the idea of adopting the name of Grafton Athletic was discussed though no decision was made at the time it was later agreed to change the club name to Grafton. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Club competitions Auckland's premier competition is the Fox Memorial Shield. This has been contested since 1910. Newton Rangers
The City Newton Dragons are a defunct New Zealand rugby league club that was based at Victoria Park, Auckland. The club was created in 1948 by a merger of two original clubs, the City Rovers and Newton Rangers. Both the Rovers and the Rangers participated in the inaugural Auckland Rugby League competition in 1910. In 2004, the club was absorbed by the Ponsonby Ponies, who play a match in the City Newton colours annually to keep the heritage of the club alive. Hec Brisbane
Hector Brisbane (1904–1963) was a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand. Playing career Brisbane played for the Marist Saints, Marist Old Boys in the Auckland Rugby League competition debuting in 1923. He had previously played for Ellerslie Eagles, Ellerslie United as a junior. In 1924, Brisbane represented Auckland rugby league team, Auckland City against the touring Great Britain Lions. He then made his debut for New Zealand, becoming List of New Zealand Kiwis representatives, Kiwi number 153. He was a part of the 1926–27 New Zealand rugby league tour of Great Britain, which was marred by the strike action by six of the forwards including Marist teammate Arthur Singe. Jack Kirwan (rugby League)
John (Jack) Patrick Kirwan (31 March 1896 – 20 October 1968) was a rugby union and rugby league player. He represented the Hawke's Bay province and Auckland in rugby union before switching to rugby league in 1924. He was selected for the New Zealand team in 1925 becoming Kiwi number 174 in the process. His grandson was also named John Kirwan and he went on to become a famous All Black in the 1980s and 90s before also switching to rugby league. Early life Kirwan was born John Patrick Kirwan on 31 March 1896 in Reefton on the West Coast of the South Island. It was common at the time for ‘John's to become known as ‘Jack’ and so John Kirwan was better known as Jack Kirwan throughout his life. His parents were Kate and Robert Kirwan. Ben Davidson (rugby League)
Benjamin Alfred Davidson (1902–1961) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. His brother Bill also represented New Zealand and another brother, George, played for Auckland and competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics as a sprinter. Playing career Alongside his brothers, Davidson played for the City Rovers in the Auckland Rugby League competition. Louie Ernest Brown (20 May 1905 – 3 June 1947) was a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He played at representative level for New Zealand, Other Nationalities and Auckland, as a or . Personal life Lou Brown was the son of Frank Brown and the nephew of the "Harrison brothers, well known in the early days of football in this ucklandprovince". Playing career Brown began his career playing rugby for Te Kowhai in the Waikato, and in 1921 he transferred to the Frankton rugby club. He was renowned for his pace which he had from an early age. At the Ngaruawahia Annual Athletic Championships in early 1922 he placed first in the 100 yard, and 220 yard races, and second in the 40 yard race. George Gardiner (rugby League)
George Gardiner was a New Zealand rugby league representative player. He played for New Zealand in 1926 becoming the 185th New Zealand representative. He was also a Bay of Plenty rugby representative as well as playing for the first ever Bay of Plenty rugby league team. After he finished his rugby league career he became a professional wrestler fighting mainly in Australia. He fought in World War 1 for New Zealand and fought and died serving in the Australian forces in World War 2. Early life It is difficult to know George Gardiner's precise date of birth as it was given as 1 February 1894 on his enlistment papers for World War 1. However, this was a fake date which enabled him to be accepted into the forces. Later when he enlisted in the Australian forces for World War 2 he gave his date of birth as 3 August 1903. Charles Gregory (rugby League)
Charles Gregory (2 July 1901 – 12 October 1988) was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in 40 matches including 3 tests from 1925 to 1930. When he debuted for New Zealand in 1925 he became Kiwi number 171. He predominantly played fullback during his career though he played standoff and centre at various points. He also represented Auckland in both rugby league and rugby union and played for the Ponsonby rugby club and the Marist rugby league club. Early life Charles Edward Gregory was born on 2 July 1901. Calvin Thomas Craddock Dufty (10 March 1900 – 1 August 1955) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Maurice Wetherill
Maurice Wetherill was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand from 1924 to 1930 and was Kiwi number 156. Early life Maurice Wetherill was born in Auckland on 15 January 1898, the son of Maurice Charles Wetherill and Mary Ann Wetherill. He had a brother, James Ewart Wetherill, and a sister, Ivy Pearl Wetherill. He was a plumber by trade, and at the time of signing up for World War I, he was living on Ardmore Road in Ponsonby, New Zealand, Ponsonby with his family and working for A.J. Letham. World War I Maurice Wetherill enlisted in the armed forces on 27 February 1918, aged 20. At the time of his service his weight was recorded as 122lb, and his height 5 feet 5 inches.
