Presidential elections were held in Portugal on 11 December 1925. Following Portugal's 1911 constitution, the Congress of the Republic must elect the president in Lisbon instead of the Portuguese people. There were a total of 7 candidates. Bernardino Machado won against his opponents and he was granted a second term as the President of Portugal. Presidential elections were held in Portugal on 6 August 1923. The Congress of the Republic elected the president in Lisbon instead of the Portuguese people. However the new president Manuel Teixeira Gomes was elected In absentia, meaning that he wasn't present during the election. There were a total of 5 candidates. Manuel Teixeira Gomes won the election against his opponents and became the next President of the Republic. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Afonso Costa
Afonso Augusto da Costa, GCTE, GCL (; born in Seia, 6 March 1871; died in Paris, 11 May 1937) was a Portuguese lawyer, professor and republican politician. Political career Costa was the leader of the Portuguese Republican Party and he was one of the major figures of the Portuguese First Republic. He was a republican deputy in the Chamber of Deputies during the last years of the monarchy. After the proclamation of the republic, he was Minister for Justice during Teófilo Braga's short-lived provisional government, which lasted from 5 October 1910 to 3 September 1911. During this period, Costa signed the controversial laws which expelled the Jesuits from Portugal, abolished all the religious orders and established the separation of church and state. These things made him a symbol of the anticlericalism of the First Republic. Francisco Gomes Teixeira
Francisco Gomes Teixeira (28 January 1851, São Cosmado, Armamar – 8 February 1933, Porto) was a Portuguese mathematician and historian of mathematics. Biography In 1876 he became a corresponding member of the Academia Real das Ciências de Lisboa. He published over 140 articles in prestigious international scientific journals. Before the year 1890 most of his publications were on mathematical analysis but from 1890 onwards most were on geometry. He was named the third astronomer of the Observatório Astronómico de Lisboa in 1878, but only held this positions for about four months before returning to the University of Coimbra. He was elected a parliamentary deputy by the Partido Regenerador in 1879 and participated in sessions of Parliament for that year and also in 1883 and 1884. Democratic Party (Portugal)
The Democratic Party (, ), officially known as the Portuguese Republican Party ( ), was a Portugal, Portuguese centre-left political party during the Portuguese First Republic. It was also the self-proclaimed successor to the original Portuguese Republican Party, which had been behind the 5 October 1910 revolution, revolution that established the Portuguese First Republic in 1910. The name "Democratic Party" was never the official name of the party, as the Portuguese Republican Party never ceased to exist.
