1924 National Amateur Cup
The 1924 National Amateur Cup was the USFA's annual cup-tie competition exclusively for amateur soccer teams. It was the second attempt but the first to be completed successfully. There were 81 entries of which Fleisher Yarn emerged as victors. The incentive in the tournament was that the winners would get to represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympics and each game was designated as an official "Olympic Tryout". It was believed that sending the champion amateur team would provide a squad with better chemistry than that of an all-star selection and require considerably less time to gel as a unit. However, as the tournament neared its final stages it became apparent that this idea might have to be reconsidered since the majority of the players on the remaining teams were foreign born and would not be eligible for the U.S. team. Fleisher Yarn
Fleisher Yarn began as an amateur company soccer club of the SB & BW Fleisher Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia and quickly became a national amateur soccer power. They won the Philadelphia Industrial League championship in 1920/21, both the Allied Amateur Cup of Philadelphia and Philadelphia's Telegraph Cup in 1922, a "quadruple" in 1923 winning the Allied Amateur League, the Allied Amateur League Cup, the Allied Amateur Cup, and the American Cup (the last by defeating the professional J&P Coats of the American Soccer League), and the inaugural National Amateur Cup. 1923 National Amateur Cup
The 1923 National Amateur Cup was the USFA's first attempt to stage a national knockout competition strictly for amateur soccer teams. This edition however did not reach a conclusion and no overall winner was crowned. The tournament suffered numerous delays. Among the worst instances was an early round game between Swedish Americans of Chicago and Gary, Indiana scheduled for mid December. Poor field conditions due to bad weather prevented the completion of their matchup until the end of March. Consequently no national final or semifinals were played. Ten years prior, the USFA's earlier incarnation, the AAFA, had conducted two tournaments on the amateur level. Both were successful in the sense that they were completed expeditiously however they were able to draw few if any teams from beyond the New York area. Johnny Jaap
Johnny Jaap (August 12, 1895 – May 1, 1974) was a Scottish-American soccer inside right. He played seven seasons in the American Soccer League and one with Hearts. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Jaap was born in Bellshill, Scotland, and moved to the United States with his family when he was a child. His family settled in Pittsburgh where he grew up playing soccer from a young age. He began his career in 1912 with a series of amateur and semi-professional teams in the Pittsburgh area. In 1921, he moved to Philadelphia Field Club of the first division American Soccer League. His first game came on February 13, 1922, a 5-2 victory over the Fall River F.C. Jaap played seven games with Philadelphia, but returned to the minor leagues for several years. In September 1925, Bethlehem Steel signed Jaap. Jaap remained with Bethlehem until it folded in 1930. Jim Purvis
Jim Purvis was a Scottish former football inside forward who played professionally in the American Soccer League. Purvis played for several youth teams, but never played professionally in Scotland before moving the United States and settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1922, he joined Fleisher Yarn which played in the Allied Amateur League of Philadelphia. Fleisher moved up to the American Soccer League in 1924 and Purvis scored seventeen goals in thirty-five league games and another two goals in two league cup games. On July 29, 1925, Purvis signed with Bethlehem Steel. Purvis scored twenty-one goals in twenty-two games before suffering a season ending ankle injury in April 1926. Bethlehem sent him to Indiana Flooring at the end of the season. He played one season with Indiana before moving to the New York Nationals for the 1927-1928 season.
