1924 Manx General Election
General elections were held in the Isle of Man between 28 October and 6 November 1924. Despite winning seats in the 1919 elections, neither the National Party nor the Liberal Party nominated candidates. Manx Labour Party
The Manx Labour Party ( gv, Partee Obbraghys Vannin) is a political party on the Isle of Man that was founded in 1918. Policies The Manx Labour Party published a manifesto of policies in 2021. It proposed increasing government spending on education to a minimum of 4% of GDP, stated opposition to privatisation of the healthcare sector, and supported increasing the statutory minimum wage. History The Manx Labour Party was formed in 1918, making it the first organised political party on the island. Its formation was prompted by the high level of indirect taxation as a proportion of the Isle of Man Government's income, the relatively low wages, and the lack of social legislation. The founders of the party saw that as being unfair to the poorest in society and wanted to increase the reliance on income taxation instead, and to introduce social legislation such as old age pensions. Elections In The Isle Of Man
The Isle of Man partially elects its legislature at the national level. The High Court of Tynwald consists of two chambers. The House of Keys has 24 members, elected in a general election for a five-year term in 12 two-seat constituencies. Each voter has two votes (but may choose to vote for only one candidate) and in each constituency the two candidates with the most votes are elected. The Legislative Council has 11 members: three ex-officio members and eight other members who are elected by the House of Keys for a five-year term. Political parties do not play an important role on the Island. The Isle of Man lowered its voting age from 18 to 16 in 2006. George Frederick Clucas
Sir George Frederick Clucas, CBE, JP (11 January 1870 – 11 November 1937) was a Manx politician and Speaker of the House of Keys from 1919 to 1937. He was born in London in 1870, the son of George Pettmann Clucas (born George Pettman Clarke), an assistant master at Repton School. He was educated at Repton School and Christ's College, Cambridge. He was called to the English Bar in 1894, and to the Manx Bar in 1895. From 1915 to 1918, he served as a deputy director at the Ministry of Munitions. He was elected MHK for Middle in 1908 and was Speaker from 1919 until his death in 1937. He was created CBE in 1927, and received a knighthood in the 1937 Coronation Honours. Joseph Davidson Qualtrough
Sir Joseph Davidson Qualtrough CBE JP SHK (11 June 1885 – 14 January 1960) was Speaker of the House of Keys from 1937 to 1960. He was born in Castletown, the son of Joseph Qualtrough MLC, Receiver General of the Isle of Man. He was educated at King William's College and then served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps from 1915 to 1919 as a lieutenant. On his return from the war he was elected MHK for Castletown in 1919 in a by-election. He was returned unopposed in 1919, 1924, 1929 and 1934 and was again returned as MHK for the same constituency at the 1946, 1951 and 1956 General Elections. He was a Methodist local preacher and a Manx speaker. In 1954, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
