Mike Shortley
Michael Joseph Shortley (October 5, 1893 – April 28, 1961) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1924, compiling a record of 2–4–2. Shortley played college football at Duquesne and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He later held a number of positions in public service, including at the Social Security Administration and Federal Security Agency. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery Arlington National Cemetery is one of two national cemeteries run by the United States Army. Duquesne University
Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit ( or ; Duquesne University or Duquesne) is a private Catholic research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Duquesne first opened as the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost in October 1878 with an enrollment of 40 students and a faculty of six. 1924 College Football Season
The 1924 college football season was the year of the Four Horsemen as the Notre Dame team, coached by Knute Rockne, won all of its games, including the Rose Bowl, to be acclaimed as the best team in the nation. Notre Dame and Stanford were both unbeaten at season's end, with the Fighting Irish winning the Rose Bowl contest 27–10. The Penn Quakers were retroactively awarded a national championship by Parke H. Davis. Red Grange's Illinois team upset Michigan. The Illini were upset by Minnesota, which in turn was upset by Vanderbilt.
