1924 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1924 season of Auckland Rugby League was its 15th. Marist won the first grade championship for the first time in their history after defeating Devonport in the final by 20 points to 17 in front of a club record crowd of 17,000 at Carlaw Park. While City won the Roope Rooster competition for the 4th time. First grade competition At a Management Committee meeting on 9 April, the Mangere United team, and Ellerslie clubs who had requested to enter senior teams in the First Grade competition were accepted, bringing the total number of teams to nine. The Mangere team registered its colours and green and black. The suggested format was one where after the first round the top six teams would continue while the bottom three teams would have other matches arranged for them. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Frank Delgrosso
Frank Delgrosso (3 November 1899 - 29 July 1981) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand. Playing career Frank attended St. Columba's School in Ponsonby. Following school he began playing for the Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby player in the Auckland Rugby League competition, Delgrosso was first selected for the New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand side in 1921. He made his Test debut against Great Britain national rugby league team, Great Britain in 1924 and went on to play in nine Test matches. This included captaining New Zealand in the second and third Test matches in 1924. He also played for the Auckland Provincial team in 1924 and scored a try in a 13–28 loss. Charles Gregory (rugby League)
Charles Gregory (2 July 1901 – 12 October 1988) was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in 40 matches including 3 tests from 1925 to 1930. When he debuted for New Zealand in 1925 he became Kiwi number 171. He predominantly played fullback during his career though he played standoff and centre at various points. He also represented Auckland in both rugby league and rugby union and played for the Ponsonby rugby club and the Marist rugby league club. Early life Charles Edward Gregory was born on 2 July 1901. Jim Rukutai
Puhipi James Rukutai (1877 – 11 January 1940) was a New Zealand rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played representative rugby league (RL) and coached New Zealand. The Auckland Rugby League's minor premiership, the Rukutai Shield, is named after him. Early years Rukutai was born at Kāwhia and affiliated to Ngāti Hikairo. He was educated at St Stephen's School. He started his career playing rugby union and was part of George A. Gillett's Goldfields team that defeated Auckland in 1906. Rukutai was working as a miner at the time. Neville St George
Robert Neville St George (2 July 1897 – 27 October 1980) was a rugby league footballer. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 2 test matches in 1925. In the process he became the 178th player to represent New Zealand. He also represented the North Island and Auckland representative side. St George played his club rugby league in Auckland for the Marist Old Boys side initially before moving to Devonport United (North Shore Albions) where he spent most of his career. Early life Robert Neville St George was born on July 2, 1897, in the Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe, New Zealand. Wally Somers
Walter Thomas "Wally" Somers was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Early life Walter Thomas Somers was born on June 14, 1899. He was the son of Amy Maria (Lawrence) and Daniel Somers. He had two sisters, Eileen Elizabeth Findlay (1896-1979) and Zelda Nina Goffin (1898-1966), and one brother Daniel Robert Lawrence Somers (1894-1944). Playing career Somers played for Newton Rangers in the Auckland Rugby League competition and appeared in a remarkable, for the era, 138 games for them from 1917 to 1929. Early in the 1929 season, he and Craddock Dufty were frustrated with the selection of the Newton team and Somers decided to retire. Hector Cole
Hector Stanley Esmond Cole was a New Zealand rugby league player who played for the New Zealand in 1926 and 1927. He made 14 appearances for them and was Kiwi number 183. Andrew O'Brien (rugby)
Andrew James O'Brien (1897–1969) was a New Zealand rugby footballer who represented New Zealand with the All Blacks and in rugby league. Rugby union career O'Brien began his career playing rugby union for Marlborough between 1919 and 1921. He also played for a combined Nelson- Marlborough- Golden Bay-Motueka side against the 1921 Springboks in the side's 26–3 defeat. Hec McDonald
Hec McDonald was a rugby league player from New Zealand. In 1924 he represented New Zealand in 3 tests against England and in so doing became Kiwi number 165. Playing career Waikato beginnings Hec McDonald began playing rugby league around the age of 21 for the Frankton Albions in 1921 where he is mentioned as being "a new man" after an appearance against Pirates on May 21. In 1922 he played for a large number of teams including the newly formed Matangi club side, the Cambridge sub union team, the Rotorua sub union team and the Bay of Plenty side against the touring New South Wales team. He played for Matangi from May through to July in the fledgling Cambridge league competition. In a match against Athletics he was involved in 3 tries in a 23–0 win. Maurice Wetherill
Maurice Wetherill was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand from 1924 to 1930 and was Kiwi number 156. Early life Maurice Wetherill was born in Auckland on 15 January 1898, the son of Maurice Charles Wetherill and Mary Ann Wetherill. He had a brother, James Ewart Wetherill, and a sister, Ivy Pearl Wetherill. He was a plumber by trade, and at the time of signing up for World War I, he was living on Ardmore Road in Ponsonby with his family and working for A.J. Letham. World War I Maurice Wetherill enlisted in the armed forces on 27 February 1918, aged 20. At the time of his service his weight was recorded as 122lb, and his height 5 feet 5 inches. John Lang (New Zealand Rugby League)
John Henry Lang (1 August 1896 – 29 November 1971) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer. A stand-off, Lang represented Auckland provincially. Lang played for Maritime in the Auckland Rugby League competition from 1919 to 1921. During the 1921 season he applied for reinstatement into Rugby Union but was refused and when he returned to league he switched to the Marist Old Boys club.
