American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Points are scored primarily by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. 1924 College Football All-America Team
The 1924 College Football All-America team is composed of college football players who were selected as All-Americans by various organizations and writers that chose College Football All-America Teams in 1924. The six selectors recognized by the NCAA as "official" for the 1924 season are (1) Walter Camp, whose selections were published in ''Collier's Weekly'', (2) ''Football World'' magazine (FW), (3) the All-America Board (AAB), (4) the International News Service (INS), (5) ''Liberty'' magazine, and (6) the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA). The only unanimous All-American in 1924 was halfback Red Grange of Illinois, known as "The Galloping Ghost" and who in 2008 was named by ESPN as the best college football player of all time. Henry Dana Carey (February 3, 1903 – March 22, 1976) was an American football player. A native of California, Carey attended the University of California, Berkeley. Norman Frotjof Anderson (March 17, 1902 – March 7, 1978) was an American track and field athlete who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Biography Norman F. 1924 College Football Season
The 1924 college football season was the year of the Four Horsemen as the Notre Dame team, coached by Knute Rockne, won all of its games, including the Rose Bowl, to be acclaimed as the best team in the nation. Notre Dame and Stanford were both unbeaten at season's end, with the Fighting Irish winning the Rose Bowl contest 27–10. The Penn Quakers were retroactively awarded a national championship by Parke H. Davis. Red Grange's Illinois team upset Michigan. The Illini were upset by Minnesota, which in turn was upset by Vanderbilt. Jim Lawson (American Football)
James Willmer Lawson (March 11, 1902 – January 3, 1989) was an American football end and placekicker who played one season with the New York Yankees of the National Football League (NFL). Lawson played college football for the Stanford football team of Stanford University. He was a consensus first-team All-American in 1924. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Wildcats of the American Football League. Early years and college career Lawson attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California. Hobbs Adams
John Hobbs Adams (November 2, 1902 – September 24, 2002) was an American college football player and coach. He served two tenures as football coach for the Kansas State Wildcats (separated by his service in World War II) and also coached high school football in San Diego. Playing career Adams grew up in San Diego and attended San Diego High School, where he starred in football, baseball, basketball and track, before graduating in 1922. Adams went on to play at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where he captained the 1925 Trojan football team and also played baseball. While playing on the USC football team in 1924, he was a key player that helped the team defeat Syracuse by score of 16–0, where future Kansas State head coach Pappy Waldorf was playing (Adams would later hold the head coaching position at Kansas State).
