Rutland And Stamford (UK Parliament Constituency)
Rutland and Stamford was a county constituency comprising the area centred on the town of Stamford in Lincolnshire, and the county of Rutland. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, using the first-past-the-post voting system. The constituency was created for the 1918 general election, and abolished for the 1983 general election. It was succeeded by the Rutland and Melton and Stamford and Spalding constituencies. Charles Harvey Dixon
Charles Harvey Dixon (1862 – 22 September 1923) was a British Conservative Party politician. Early life and education Born at Watlington, Oxfordshire, he was the son of Dr Henry Dixon, coroner for South Oxfordshire. Dixon transferred from Lord Weymouth's Grammar School, Warminster to Abingdon School in September 1878 and was at Abingdon until 1881. Career He unsuccessfully contested the Harborough constituency, Leicestershire, in 1900, 1904 (by-election) and 1906. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Boston at the January 1910 general election, but retired from Parliament when the constituency was abolished at the 1918 general election. He was again elected as MP for Rutland and Stamford at the general election in November 1922, sitting until his death in September 1923. His parliamentary interests were agriculture and finance. Neville Woodford Smith-Carington (1878 – 7 October 1933) was a British Member of Parliament. Born at Ashby Folville Manor near Melton Mowbray, Smith-Carington was educated at Harrow College and Exeter College, Oxford. He became a barrister at the Inner Temple. Smith-Carington stood for the Conservative Party in Loughborough at the January 1910 United Kingdom general election, but was not elected. He then stood in the 1923 Rutland and Stamford by-election, winning the seat, which he held until his death in 1933.
