1922 South Dakota Gubernatorial Election
The 1922 South Dakota gubernatorial election was held on November 7, 1922. Incumbent Republican Governor William H. McMaster ran for re-election to a second term. After beating back a challenge in the Republican primary from perennial candidate George W. Egan, McMaster advanced to the general election, where he faced former State Senate President Louis N. Crill, the Democratic nominee, and suffragist Alice Lorraine Daly, the Nonpartisan League's nominee, and the first woman to run for governor. Alice Lorraine Daly
Alice Lorraine Daly (February 1883 – October 16, 1945) was an American educator, suffragist, politician, labor activist, and pacifist in South Dakota. She ran in the 1922 South Dakota gubernatorial election, receiving more than a quarter of the vote. Early life Alice Lorraine Daly was born in Minnesota, the daughter of George H. Daly and Mary Ellen Egan. She grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and attended the University of Minnesota, with additional studies at the Emerson College of Oratory in Boston. Career Daly taught in Pocatello, Idaho, as a young woman, and was an officer in the Idaho State Teachers’ Association. She moved to a job at the state normal school in Madison, South Dakota, in 1915; that year, she addressed the state's suffrage convention. The 1920 South Dakota gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1920. Incumbent Republican Governor Peter Norbeck declined to run for re-election, instead choosing to run for the U.S. Senate. Lieutenant Governor William H. McMaster won the Republican primary and advanced to the general election, where he faced Nonpartisan League candidate Mark P. Bates and former State Senator William W. The 1902 South Dakota gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 1902. Incumbent Republican Governor Charles N. Herreid ran for re-election to a second term. He faced former Watertown Mayor John W. Martin, the Fusion nominee who was listed as the Democratic nominee, in the general election. Herreid defeated Martin in a landslide to win his second term. Republican convention At the Republican convention in June 1902, Governor Charles N. Herreid was renominated unanimously and without opposition. Fusion conventions As was the case in 1898 and 1900, the Democratic and Populist Parties held separate conventions and then fused together with a common set of nominees.
