1921 All England Badminton Championships
The 1921 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held at the Royal Horticultural Hall, Westminster, England from 2 March to 6 March 1921. Sir George Thomas successfully defended the men's singles title and he partnered Hazel Hogarth in also defending their mixed doubles crown. Kitty McKane made it three defending champions retaining their titles after winning the women's singles. McKane also partnered her older sister Margaret McKane when winning the women's doubles. The final championship event the men's doubles saw Thomas claim a third title at the 1921 Championships, with Frank Hodge. All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. Lavinia Radeglia
Lavinia Clara Radeglia (1879 in Kensington – 1947 in Budleigh Salterton), was an English badminton player. She first played badminton in 1903 at the Richmond Badminton Club. She became an England international in 1909 and won four All England titles. She was a one time editor of the Badminton Gazette and a well known Lawn Tennis player and became a professional tennis coach. Dorothy Cundall
Dorothy Ursula Cundall (1882 – 8 February 1954) was an English badminton player. Born in 1882 in Richmond, London she was a prominent player before the First World War winning three All England titles. In 1912 she married Douglas Harvey (who died in 1917). Cundall played as Mrs Harvey afterwards. In 1922 she remarried to Bert Bisgood, a prominent Somerset cricketer who also represented Ireland at badminton. She died in Bournemouth on 8 February 1954. She had two children, Ian Harvey, a Conservative MP, and Jeanne Bisgood, an English international golfer. Marian Horsley
Marian Horsley née Edith Marian Bagshaw Mann (1893-1958) was an English badminton player. She came to prominence whilst still at school and with a reputation as a fitness fanatic gained 24 England caps. She competed in the All England Championships winning two titles in 1929 and 1931. Twenty years later she won the Berks, Bucks and Oxon title four times, the last aged 60. She married Reginald John Horsley in 1916 and played as Mrs Horsley afterwards. Eveline Peterson
Eveline Grace Peterson (17 January 1877 – 1944) was an English female badminton player. She mainly competed in the All England Open Badminton Championships, Scottish Open and Irish Open from the 1910s to the late 1920s. Peterson was born in Jalpaiguri, British India, to civil servant Frederick William Voysey Peterson and Mary Ann Jefford Hopewell. The family later moved to 12 Ildersly Grove in Dulwich. She achieved her maiden Championship title in her career after claiming the women's doubles title during the 1914 All England Badminton Championships partnering with Margaret Tragett. Henry Robert Charles Martin
Henry Robert Charles Martin (1889 – 1942) was a long-serving officer of arms at the College of Arms in London and a male English international badminton player. Profile Born at Maskeliya, Ceylon, the eldest son of Henry Thomas Martin, later of South Kensington, Martin was educated at Bedford School, then at Lincoln College, Oxford. He was called to the bar from the Middle Temple in 1912. He represented England as a badminton player. During the First World War, he served as a captain in the East Lancashire Regiment, and in the Intelligence Department from 1938-41. His first heraldic appointment came on 31 May 1922 when he was made Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary to replace Archibald George Blomefield Russell. He held this position until 2 August 1928 when he was promoted to the office of Richmond Herald of Arms in Ordinary to replace Gerald Wollaston. Herbert Septimus Uber (1885-1969), was a male badminton player from England. Badminton career Uber born in Lambeth was a four times winner of the All England Open Badminton Championships. He won the men's doubles in 1925 and then won three more titles in the mixed doubles. He gained his England caps while playing for Surrey. He was part of the English touring team that visited Canada during 1930. A match was held at the Granite Club in Toronto which England won 7-2.
