The 1920–21 Football League, 1920–21 season was Port Vale F.C., Port Vale's second consecutive season of football (15th overall) in the English Football League. The season peaked early with a double victory in the league over Potteries derby, rivals Stoke City F.C., Stoke, however, any sense of euphoria evaporated in February with the sale of star striker Bobby Blood. The club failed to find another reliable goalscorer until the arrival of Wilf Kirkham in 1923. William Aitken (footballer)
William John Aitken (2 February 1894 – 9 August 1973) was a Scottish football player and manager. A forward, he was known for his trait of bouncing the ball on his head whilst running along the touchline, and was normally known as Willie or Billy. He began his career at Kirkintilloch, before joining Rangers via Queen's Park in 1918. He signed with Port Vale in 1919, before he was sold on to Newcastle United for £2,500 in May 1920. He spent four seasons at Tyneside, before joining Preston North End in 1924. He spent two years with the "Lambs", and after spells at Chorley, Norwich City, and Bideford Town, he was appointed as head coach at Italian club Juventus in 1928. He moved on to France the following year to play for AS Cannes. He played in the 1932 Coupe de France final victory, and was later appointed as club manager. Peter Pursell
Peter Pursell (1 July 1894 – 14 August 1968) was a Scottish Association football, footballer. A Defender (association football), defender, he won one Cap (sport), cap for Scotland national football team, Scotland in 1914. He was the younger brother of Bob Pursell (footballer, born 1889), Robert Russell Pursell, and the father of Bob Pursell (footballer, born 1919), Robert Wilson Pursell. Bob Pursell (footballer, Born 1889)
Robert Russell Pursell (18 March 1889 – 24 May 1974) was a Scottish footballer who played for Liverpool in the early 20th century. He was the elder brother of Peter Pursell and uncle of the similarly named Robert Wilson Pursell. He played in the 1914 FA Cup Final, but was banned for life for his part in the 1915 British football betting scandal. However his ban was lifted for his actions in World War I, and he went on to play for Port Vale, before retiring with a broken leg in 1922. Career Queen's Park Born in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, Pursell attended Aberdeen University before signing for Queen's Park. He scored on his Scottish League Division One debut for the "Spiders" on 28 August 1909, in a 2–2 draw with Heart of Midlothian at Hampden Park. Billy Briscoe
William Briscoe (6 November 1896 – 7 February 1994) was an English Association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), forward. A former Watford F.C., Watford, Stoke City F.C., Stoke, Milton Brotherhood, and Leek United player; he first turned professional with Port Vale F.C., Port Vale in 1918. After five years he moved on to Congleton Town F.C., Congleton Town for a season, only to return to Vale in 1924. He then spent the next seven years with the club, racking up a combined total of 307 league appearances for the club over his two spells, scoring 51 goals. He returned to Congleton in 1931 before later retiring from the game. Joe Brough
Joseph Brough (9 November 1886 – 5 October 1968) was an English footballer. He was also an accomplished cycler and sprinter. Able to play at half-back or as a forward, he began his professional career with Burslem Port Vale in February 1907. He transferred to Stoke later in the year, before finding himself at Tottenham Hotspur. Failing to make an impression in London, he returned to Port Vale in 1909, and scored a club record 43 goals in the 1909–10 season. This won him a move to Liverpool in August 1910, though after falling from the first-team picture he moved on to Bristol City in January 1912. He again returned to Port Vale in May 1913, before he saw action in World War I in 1917. He retired from professional football in 1922, having featured in 209 competitive games for Port Vale. Tom Holford
Thomas Holford (22 February 1878 – 6 April 1964) was an English footballer who played for Stoke, Manchester City, Port Vale and the England national team. His primary position was wing-half, but over the course of his career he played in many different positions. He later managed Port Vale on two separate occasions, serving throughout World War I, before a three-year spell from 1932 to 1935. He also served the club for many years as a trainer and a scout. In 1924 he turned out for the Vale at the age of 46 years and 68 days, making him one of the oldest ever players in the English Football League.
