Aston Villa F
Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in medieval times to replace an earlier church. The body of the church was rebuilt by J. A. Chatwin during the period 1879 to 1890; the 15th century tower and spire, which was partly rebuilt in 1776, being the only survivors of the medieval building. Sam Hardy (footballer)
Sam Hardy (26 August 1882 – 24 October 1966) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Football career In 1902, Chesterfield manager Jack Hoskin beat Derby County to sign Hardy, doing so under a lamp post in Newbold. Hardy, something of a shrewd character, wouldn't sign the forms until Hoskin promised to pay him 18 shillings when the original offer was five shillings. Hardy soon gained himself a reputation for being unfazeable and it wasn't long before he started attracting the attention of the top clubs in the country. Liverpool manager Tom Watson had witnessed him play against his side in a 2nd Division fixture at Anfield and although Liverpool won the match 6–1, Watson remembered that if it hadn't been for the performance of Hardy that day, Liverpool could well have gone on to record their biggest-ever win. Benjamin Albert Olney (30 March 1899 – 23 September 1943) was an English international footballer, who played as a goalkeeper. Career Born in Holborn, Olney played professionally for Derby County and Aston Villa, and earned two caps for England in 1928. Ian Dickson (footballer)
Ian William Dickson (30 April 1901 – 1956) was a Scottish professional footballer whose played as a forward. He played for Queen of the South, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. He was the grandfather of another Ian Dickson, the Australian television and radio personality. Queen of the South Dickson also had spells at Maxwelltown United and Cheshaw Juniors. George Blackburn (footballer, Born 1899)
George Fredrick Blackburn (3 August 1899 – 7 March 1957) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England. A left-half, he made over 250 appearances in the Football League during his career and won one cap for England in May 1924. Early life Blackburn was born in Willesden and lived in Sandringham Road as a child, attending Pound Lane School. He was one of six children. His father was a brass finisher. Club career Blackburn started his career at Hampstead Town, now known as Hendon. He signed for Aston Villa as an amateur in December 1920 and went on to play over 100 games, including their 2–0 defeat to Newcastle United in the 1924 FA Cup Final. Thomas Jackson (16 March 1898 – 1975) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He made close to 200 competitive appearances for Aston Villa, taking over from Sam Hardy when the veteran English international moved to Nottingham Forest. George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'. As a player he was the first Aston Villa captain to lift a trophy, being instrumental in establishing the club as force in the game.
