1919 Birthday Honours (OBE)
This is a list of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) awards in the 1919 Birthday Honours. The 1919 Birthday Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of The King, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' from 3 June to 12 August. The vast majority of the awards were related to the recently ended War, and were divided by military campaigns. A supplementary list of honours, retroactive to the King's birthday, was released in December 1919. Margaret Winifred Vowles
Margaret Winifred Vowles (née Pearce; 4 January 1882, Gloucester – 4 March 1932, Kingston) was an English author on science. Parentage She was the daughter of Francis Tring Pearce (16 Mar 1846 – 19 May 1935) and Martha Allen of Lorraine House, Gloucester, England. FT Pearce was a director of Priday, Metford and Company Limited millers of Gloucester and he was the son of Maria Tring (died 19 October 1853) and Thomas Pearce (died 13 January 1895). Thomas Pearce owned a Chemist at 134 Westgate Street, Gloucester from 1841 to 1870. Thomas Pearce was the son of Joseph Pearce (died 7 July 1847 at Birlingham, Worcestershire, a "yeoman"). Her maternal grandfather was Henry Allen who was Mayor of Gloucester in 1873. Officer Of The Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Bertram Keir Cunningham
Bertram Keir Cunningham, (26 March 1871 – 10 September 1944), also known as B. K. Cunningham, was a British Anglican priest and academic. From 1919 to 1943, he was Principal of Westcott House, Cambridge, a Church of England theological college. Ordained ministry Cunningham worked with the Cambridge University Mission to Delhi and also as a lay minister in the Diocese of Lahore. Ronald Forbes Adam
General Sir Ronald Forbes Adam, 2nd Baronet, (30 October 1885 – 26 December 1982) was a senior British Army officer. He had an important influence on the conduct of the British Army during the Second World War as a result of his long tenure as Adjutant-General, responsible for the army's organisation and personnel, from June 1941 until the end of the war, and as a close confidant of Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS), the professional head of the British Army. A graduate of Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, Adam was commissioned on 27 July 1905 into the Royal Artillery. After a posting to India with the Royal Horse Artillery, he served on the Western Front and the Italian Front during the First World War. Eric Plant
Major General Eric Clive Pegus Plant, (23 April 1890 – 17 May 1950) was an officer in the Australian Army who served during the First and Second World Wars. Plant served in the pre-war part-time military from 1908, before joining the permanent forces in 1912. During the First World War, he volunteered for the First Australian Imperial Force and served at Gallipoli in 1915 as the adjutant of an infantry battalion. Later, he served as a staff officer at both brigade and divisional levels on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. Plant remained in the military during the interwar years and undertook various staff and training positions. Edward Wooll
Edward Wooll, OBE, QC (31 March 1878 – 20 May 1970) was a British barrister, playwright, and novelist. Biography The eldest son of the Reverend C. W. Wooll, Vicar of Ditton, Lancashire, Edward Wooll was educated at Liverpool College and New College, Oxford, where he took first-class honours in Classical Moderations. He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1903. He was one of the first two pupils to join the Liverpool chambers of F. E. Smith, later Earl of Birkenhead. Wooll served in the Cheshire Yeomanry from 1914 to 1927, retiring as a captain. During the First World War, he served with the Cavalry Corps Headquarters, British Expeditionary Force; for his wartime service, he was mentioned in dispatches twice and was appointed OBE. Arthur Owen Vaughan
Lt. Colonel Arthur Owen Vaughan, (6 September 1863 – 15 October 1919), also known by his bardic name Owen Rhoscomyl, was an English-born writer, soldier and Welsh nationalist. Born as Robert Scowfield Mills in England, Owen Rhoscomyl was influenced by his Welsh grandmother and became a notable patriot to Wales and its history. Early life Vaughan was born in Southport, but moved to Droylsden, Lancashire where he was raised. As a child, Vaughan was highly influenced by his maternal grandmother, who was born in Tremeirchion in North Wales. At the age of 15 he ran away from home and went to sea, travelling to America. Charles Romer
Sir Charles Robert Ritchie Romer, (19 January 1897 – 15 February 1969) was a British judge who served as Lord Justice of Appeal between 1951 and 1960. Life and career Romer was born into a judicial family: he was the son of Mark Romer, Baron Romer, a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and the grandson of Sir Robert Romer, a Lord Justice of Appeal. He was the nephew of Sir Cecil Romer and was also related to Frederic Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham, the Lord Chancellor, and Frank Russell, Baron Russell of Killowen, a Lord Justice of Appeal. George Monckton-Arundell, 8th Viscount Galway
George Vere Arundel Monckton-Arundell, 8th Viscount Galway, (24 March 1882 – 27 March 1943) was a British politician. He served as the fifth Governor-General of New Zealand from 1935 to 1941. Sir Cuthbert Morley Headlam, 1st Baronet, (27 April 1876 – 27 February 1964) was a British Conservative politician. Career Born in Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, the third of the five sons of Francis John Headlam (1829–1908), stipendiary magistrate of Manchester, and his wife, Matilda Ann, ''née'' Pincofts. The Headlams were a minor gentry family with roots in north Yorkshire. Headlam was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and then read modern history at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he received his BA in March 1900. Nicholas Hannen (actor)
Nicholas James "Beau" Hannen OBE (mil) (1 May 1881 – 25 June 1972) was a British actor of the early and mid-20th century who acted in a number of stage plays and films. Early life Hannen was born on 1 May 1881 at No. 40 Westbourne Park Road, London, England. He was brought up in Yokohama and Shanghai where his father, Sir Nicholas John Hannen was serving, first as Judge of the British Court for Japan (1881–1891) and then Chief Justice of the British Supreme Court for China and Japan (1891–1900) as well as Consul-General in Shanghai (1891–1897). He attended Radley College from 1895 to 1900 where he was a member of the rowing eight. His uncle, James Hannen was also a noted English judge. Sir Nicholas Hannen died, in 1900, at the young age of 58 in Shanghai just before Beau turned 19. William Venning Glanville Hancock (27 April 1892 – 8 February 1964) was an officer in the British Army. Hancock was born on 27 April 1892 in Penzance, a town in Cornwall, England.
