1918 United States Senate Election In New Jersey
The 1918 United States Senate elections in New Jersey were held on November 7, 1918. Incumbent Democratic Party (US), Democratic Senator William Hughes (U.S. Senator), William Hughes died in office in January. Republican governor of New Jersey Walter Evans Edge was elected to the six-year term over Democrat George LaMonte. In a special election held the same day, interim Senator David Baird Sr. (whom Edge had appointed) was elected to serve the remainder of Senator Hughes' term over Charles O'Connor Hennessy. In the primary election on September 24, Edge easily won the Republican nomination over George L. Record and Edward W. Gray. LaMonte won a four-cornered primary over Charles O'Connor Hennessy, Alexander Simpson (politician), Alexander Simpson, and Frank M. McDermit. Walter Evans Edge
Walter Evans Edge (November 20, 1873October 29, 1956) was an American diplomat and Republican Party (United States), Republican politician who served as the 36th governor of New Jersey, from 1917 to 1919 and again from 1944 to 1947, during both World War I and World War II. Edge also served as United States Senate, United States Senator representing New Jersey from 1919 to 1929 and as United States Ambassador to France from 1929 to 1933. Early life Edge was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1873. His father, William Edge, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. George LaMonte
George Mason La Monte (June 4, 1863 – December 24, 1927) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and Democratic politician. He was the Democratic nominee for United States Senate in New Jersey in 1918 and served as chairman of the board of the Prudential Insurance Company. Early life and business career La Monte was born in 1863 in Danville, Virginia, the son of George T. La Monte and Rebecca Kern. His family later settled in Bound Brook, where he lived until his death. He studied at Columbia University for a year before entering Wesleyan University, where he graduated in 1884. After working as a commercial reporter for the Bradstreet company, he trained at the paper company of Augustine Smith & Co. for several years. La Monte then joined his father in the formation of a company to manufacture safety paper used as an anti-fraud measure in the printing of checks and money orders. Charles O'Connor Hennessy
Charles O'Connor Hennessy (September 11, 1860 – 1936) was an American Democratic Party politician who served as a member of both the New Jersey General Assembly and the New Jersey Senate. In 1916 he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of New Jersey. He played a major role in the growth of Haworth, New Jersey, where he founded the Haworth Country Club. He was chairman of the Franklin Society for Building and Savings. He was a dedicated advocate of Georgism.
