1918 Cork Senior Hurling Championship
The 1918 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 31st staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. Redmonds were the defending champions, however, the club refused to field a team in the championship after a dispute with the county board after the suspension of some players from their Gaelic football team. On 28 September 1918, Carrigtwohill won the championship following a 4–1 to 1–7 defeat of Blackrock in the final. This was their first championship title ever. Blackrock GAA
Blackrock National Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located on the southside of Cork City, Ireland. The club was founded in 1883 and is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. No other Cork-based GAA club has won more Senior County Hurling titles or All-Ireland Club Championships. The club is sometimes known as 'The Rockies'. History Blackrock Hurling Club was officially founded in 1883, one year before the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association itself. Andy Buckley (hurler)
Andy "Dooric" Buckley (born 1884) was an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward for the Cork senior team. Born in Blackrock, County Cork, Buckley first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Cork senior team. He made his senior debut during the delayed 1903 championship. Buckley immediately became a regular member of the starting team, and won one All-Ireland medal and two Munster medals. At club level, Buckley was a six-time championship medallist with Blackrock. He was one of the most prolific goal-scorers of his era, and scored upwards of 21 championship goals. Throughout his career, he made 21 championship appearances. He retired from senior inter-county hurling after the 1914 championship, however, he later returned as a member of the Cork junior team. Redmonds GAA
Redmonds is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Cork in County Cork, Ireland. The club is situated in Tower Street, on the southside of the city. The club participates in Cork GAA competitions and in Seandún divisional board competitions. The club no longer fields hurling teams but continues to participate in the Seandun junior C football competitions. History Redmonds GAA have been in the Senior Hurling Championship Finals 10 times from their first finals appearance in 1892 to their last finals appearance in 1927. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. UCC is a football and hurling club associated with University College Cork. UCC teams play in the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship as well as the two main third-level competitions namely the Sigerson Cup in football, the Fitzgibbon Cup in hurling and the Ashbourne Cup in camogie. Cork Athletic Grounds
The Cork Athletic Grounds was a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium where major hurling and football matches were played. Situated in the Ballintemple area of Cork in Ireland, it was the home of Cork GAA between 1904 and 1974. The stadium was demolished in 1974 and replaced by Páirc Uí Chaoimh. History In late 1902 an attempt was made by the Cork County Board of the GAA to provide Cork city with a dedicated athletic stadium. A new company, the Cork Athletic Grounds Committee Ltd., was established under the chairmanship of James Crosbie. The county board invested £30 in the venture and a member of the board was appointed as a director. The subscriptions for the share capital reached sufficient funds, and in early 1903 a lease for six acres was drawn up between the Cork Agricultural Society, the Cork Corporation and the Cork County Board treasurer John FitzGerald.
