1918 Calgary Municipal Election
The 1918 Calgary municipal election was held on December 9, 1918 to a Mayor and six Aldermen to sit on Calgary City Council. Additionally a Commissioner, three members for the Public School Board were elected. There were twelve aldermen on city council, but five of the positions were already filled: Samuel Hunter Adams, Andrew Graham Broatch, Frank Roy Freeze, Annie Gale, and Albert Mahaffy were all elected to two-year terms in 1917 and were still in office. Robert Colin Marshall was elected as an Alderman in 1917 for a two-year term, but resigned to run for mayor. A number of plebiscites were held, all requiring a majority to pass. The election was held under the Single Transferable Voting/Proportional Representation (STV/PR) with the term for Alderman being two years and the Mayor being one year. The ''Calgary Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Publication began in 1883 as ''The Calgary Herald, Mining and Ranche Advocate, and General Advertiser''. It is owned by the Postmedia Network. History ''The Calgary Herald, Mining and Ranche Advocate and General Advertiser'' started publication on 31 August 1883 in a tent at the junction of the Bow and Elbow by Thomas Braden, a school teacher, and his friend, Andrew Armour, a printer, and financed by "a five-hundred- dollar interest-free loan from a Toronto milliner, Miss Frances Ann Chandler." It started as a weekly paper with 150 copies of only four pages created on a handpress that arrived 11 days earlier on the first train to Calgary. A year's subscription cost $3. Robert Parkyn
Robert Henry Parkyn (November 19, 1862 – June 13, 1939) was a municipal and provincial level politician and tradesman in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Early life Parkyn was born in Cornwall, United Kingdom on November 19, 1862 to William and Annie Parkyn. He was educated in public schools in Cornwall. Later, he apprenticed as a Carpenter and Joiner, and joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of England. Robert married Matilda Edwards of Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1895, and had seven male children. The family moved to Calgary in 1910. Municipal career Robert Parkyn was elected to Calgary City Council as an Alderman on the Labor ticket for the first time on January 2, 1922 and served his first stint as Alderman until January 2, 1924. Herbert Arthur Sinnott
Herbert Arthur Sinnott (January 7, 1871 – after 1923) was a Canadian educator, lawyer and municipal politician who served as the 18th mayor of Calgary, Alberta from 1913 to 1915. Sinnott was born in Kings County, New Brunswick on January 7, 1871 to David S., a farmer, and Frances (née Taylor) Sinnott.MacRae 1912, pg. 573 After attending schools in Sussex, New Brunswick, Sinnott graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Arts and started his teaching career in Gagetown as principal of a grammar school. He later taught high school in Moncton, New Brunswick before moving west to Alberta in 1900. In 1903, he became a high school principal in Calgary, the first ever to the city. Frederick Ernest Osborne (January 20, 1878 – October 22, 1948) was a Canadian politician and businessman. Life and career Frederick Ernest Osborne was born on January 10, 1879, in Belleville, Ontario to Richard Osborne (English) and Sarah Anne (née Vickers). He was educated in Belleville and attended Ontario Business College. Osborne married Florence Curlette, of Belleville, Ontario, on September 21, 1901. In 1905, Osborne came to Calgary and founded Osborne's Book Store, a retail outlet that sold books, stationery, and school supplies. Osborne's Book Store remained in its original location, 112 8 Avenue SW, until it was destroyed by fire in 1966. Osborne was actively involved in Calgary politics.
