1917 Allan Cup
The 1917 Allan Cup was the Canadian senior ice hockey championship for the 1916–17 season. The title was first held by the Winnipeg Victorias who won their league and two challenges, before losing in the final challenge to the Toronto Dentals. League championship The defending 1916 Allan Cup champions, Winnipeg 61st Battalion, did not compete due to the war. As champions of the Winnipeg Patriotic League, the Winnipeg Victorias take over the Allan Cup title. Allan Cup
The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men's ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The current champions are the Lacombe Generals, who captured the 2019 Allan Cup in Lacombe, Alberta. History In 1908, a split occurred in the competition of ice hockey in Canada. The top amateur teams left the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association, which allowed professionals, to form the new Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union (IPAHU), a purely amateur league. The trustees of the Stanley Cup decided that the Cup would be awarded to the professional ice champion, meaning there was no corresponding trophy for the amateur championship of Canada. Senior Ice Hockey
Senior hockey refers to amateur or semi-professional ice hockey competition. There are no age restrictions for Senior players, who typically consist of those whose Junior eligibility has expired. Senior hockey leagues operate under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada or USA Hockey. They are not affiliated in any way with professional hockey leagues. Many former professional players play Senior hockey after their pro careers are over. The top Senior AAA teams in Canada compete annually for the Allan Cup. Winnipeg Victorias
The Winnipeg Victorias were a former amateur senior-level men's amateur ice hockey team in Winnipeg, Manitoba, organized in 1889. They played in the Manitoba Hockey Association (MHA) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Victorias won the Stanley Cup in February 1896, 1901 and January 1902 while losing the Cup in December 1896, February 1899, February 1900, March 1902, and February 1903. After the Stanley Cup became the professional championship, the Victorias continued in senior-level amateur play, winning the Allan Cup in 1911 and 1912. Winnipeg 61st Battalion
Winnipeg 61st Battalion was a Canadian ice hockey team. Composed of players from the 61st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force created to participate in World War I, the team won the Pattison Trophy in 1915–16 as Manitoba provincial champions, defeating the defending champion Winnipeg Monarchs. The Winnipeg Monarchs protested when the Winnipeg 61st Battalion were chosen to defend the Allan Cup as Winnipeg Patriotic Hockey League champions, since the Monarchs considered the patriotic games to be exhibitions. The Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association subsequently upheld Claude C. Robinson's decision that the 61st Battalion defend the Allan Cup, but that the Monarchs would be given the opportunity to defend the cup only if the soldiers had to leave Winnipeg due to military service. OHA Senior A League (1890–1979)
The Ontario Hockey Association Senior A League was a top tier Canadian senior ice hockey league in Ontario from 1890 until 1979. The league was sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Association and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and its clubs competed for the Allan Cup. History The league was founded in 1890 by the Ontario Hockey Association. At the top tier of Canadian Senior hockey, the league was eligible and often competed for the Allan Cup. In 1975, the OHA allowed Hockey Northwestern Ontario's Thunder Bay Twins, the defending Allan Cup champions to enter the league.
