1916 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Team
The 1916 Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represented the University of Minnesota in the 1916 college football season. In their 17th year under head coach Henry L. Williams, the Golden Gophers compiled a 6–1 record (3–1 against Western Conference opponents) and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 348 to 28. End Bert Baston and quarterback Shorty Long were named All-Americans by the Associated Press. Baston was also named an All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Baston, guard Conrad L. Eklund tackle Frank Mayer and fullback Arnold "Pudge" Wyman were named All-Big Ten first team. Stagg Field
Amos Alonzo Stagg Field is the name of two successive football fields for the University of Chicago. Beyond sports, the first Stagg Field (1893–1957) is remembered for its role in a landmark scientific achievement of Enrico Fermi and the Metallurgical Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. The site of the first artificial nuclear chain reaction, which occurred within the field's west viewing-stands structure, received designation as a National Historic Landmark on February 18, 1965. On October 15, 1966, which is the day that the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 was enacted creating the National Register of Historic Places, it was added to that as well. The site was named a Chicago Landmark on October 27, 1971. A Henry Moore sculpture, ''Nuclear Energy'', in a small quadrangle commemorates the location of the nuclear experiment.

The 1916 Chicago Maroons football team was an American football team that represented the University of Chicago during the 1916 college football season. In their 25th season under head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, the Maroons compiled a 3–4 record, finished in fourth place in the Big Ten Conference, Western Conference, and were outscored by their opponents by a combined total of 110 to 65. Minnesota–Wisconsin Football Rivalry
The Minnesota–Wisconsin football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers. It is the most-played rivalry in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, with 132 meetings between the two teams. The winner of the game receives Paul Bunyan's Axe, a tradition that started in 1948 after the first trophy, the Slab of Bacon, disappeared after the 1943 game when the Badgers were supposed to turn it over to the Golden Gophers. Minnesota and Wisconsin first played in 1890 and have met every year since, except for 1906. The series is tied 62–62–8 through 2022.
