Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Ørnulf Gulbransen
Ørnulf Gulbransen (born 19 December 1916 in Kristiania (Oslo), Norway – deceased 20 February 2004 in Oslo) was a Norwegian Classical musician (flute), married 1945 to the violinist Elsa Lilian Gustavsen (b. 1921). Career Gulbransen had for more than 50 years a leading position in Norwegian music. He was known as an outstanding flautist and flute teacher both in Norway and internationally. He had an immenses influence as a soloist, chamber musician and professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and was a catalyst for the growth and progress on the Norwegian music scene over the last half century. Gulbransen debuted in 1938, as solo flutist in Filharmonisk Selskaps orkester (1941–71) and primarius in Den Norske Blåsekvintett (1955–72). He gave extensive education, including at Oslo Musikkonservatorium, Ingesund College of Music (Musikhögskolan Ingesund) and the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Greta Gynt
Greta Gynt (born Margrethe Woxholt; 15 November 1916 – 2 April 2000) was a Norwegian dancer and actress. She is remembered for her starring roles in the British classic films '' The Dark Eyes of London'', ''Mr. Emmanuel'', ''Take My Life'', ''Dear Murderer'' and '' The Ringer''. She played lead roles in minor British films in the 1930s and early 40s, and by the late 40s she appeared in major films. The Rank Organisation tried to market her as the British Jean Harlow. She also attempted a career in the US, starring in MGM's ''Soldiers Three'' (1951) before returning to Britain. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. Robert Normann
Robert Uno Normann (27 June 1916 – 20 May 1998) was a Norwegian guitarist and considered a jazz guitar pioneer. Career Normann was an autodidact performer on the accordion and tenor saxophone, and eventually on the guitar as his main instrument. He was one of the swing era's most sought guitar soloists in Norway, and was also a pioneer of electric guitar. His first electric guitar was enabled in 1939 by constructing a pickup of copper wire, magnets and pitch, stolen from public phones, Normann told in an interview with Jon Larsen. ;Background Normann began his musical career as a wandering street and backyard musician at age 12. He was a professional musician in 1937. On Oslo jazz scene he performed in several swing jazz groups. Christian Cappelen
Christian Cappelen (26 January 1845 – 11 May 1916) was a Norwegian organist and composer. Biography Cappelen was born in Drammen, Norway. He studied under Ludvig Mathias Lindeman and at the Leipzig Conservatoire. In 1887, after 20 years as organist in Drammen ( Strømsø and Bragernes), he became organist at VÃ¥r Frelsers kirke (Oslo Cathedral), a position he held until his death in 1916. He gained a prominent position of the Norwegian Church music. He was also teacher at the practical-theological seminary at the University of Oslo from 1890 until 1916. Cappelen was known as a highly skilled organ player and improviser, and he gave concerts all over Norway.
