1915 Detroit Tigers Football Team
The 1915 Detroit Tigers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Detroit in the 1915 college football season. In its first season under head coach Harry Costello, the team compiled a 1–5 record and was outscored by its opponents by a combined total of 207 to 18. In its schedule for the 1915 University of Detroit football team, College Football Data Warehouse erroneously included an undated game against Hutchinson Central High School from Buffalo, New York. However, the ''Detroit Free Press'' for October 17, 1915, at page 23, shows that the game against Hutchinson was played on October 16 at Elmwood Field by the "Detroit University School", a high school team in Detroit, not by the University of Detroit. In fact, the University of Detroit team played a game against Olivet College at Mack Park on the same afternoon. Harry Costello
Harry Joseph Costello (November 9, 1891 – August 24, 1968) was an American college football player and coach who later served as an officer in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War. Early years The son of Patrick Costello, he was born around 1892. Georgetown University He was an alumnus of Georgetown University, where he has been described as a "legendary quarterback." 1911 Costello was a halfback selected for ''Outing'' magazine's "Football Honor List for 1911" picked by coaches from the East and West. Ferry Field
Ferry Field is a multi-purpose stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It opened in 1906 and was home to the Michigan Wolverines football team prior to the opening of Michigan Stadium in 1927. It had a capacity of 46,000. It is currently used as a tailgating space for football games. After football moved to Michigan Stadium, Ferry Field was converted to an outdoor track and field facility and was still used for this purpose until 2018. In 1935, Ohio State sprinter Jesse Owens set world records in the 220 yard dash, the 200 meter dash, the 220 yard low hurdles, the 200 meter low hurdles, and the long jump, and tied the world record in the 100 yard dash, all within a 45-minute timespan. The 1915 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan as an independent during the 1915 college football season. In its 15th season under head coach was Fielding H. Yost the team compiled a 4–3–1 record and outscored opponents by a total of 130 to 81. After winning its first four games, the Wolverines lost three consecutive games. Right guard William D. Cochran was the team captain. Key players included left halfback John Maulbetsch, quarterback Lawrence Roehm, fullback Cedric C. Smith, center Walter Niemann, and guard Frank Millard. Maulbetch was selected as a first-team All-American by Tommy Clark and as a second-team player by Walter Eckersall and Monty. Mack Park
Mack Park was the original home field of Detroit's Negro National League baseball franchise, the Detroit Stars. It was constructed in 1914 by Joe Roesink, sponsor of a local semi-professional team, a Dutchman of Jewish descent born in Grand Rapids who owned a chain of haberdasheries. Location The park was located on the east side of Detroit, about four miles from downtown, at the southeast corner of Fairview Ave. and Mack Ave., after which it was named.
