Appleby (UK Parliament Constituency)
Appleby was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in the county of Westmorland in England. It existed for two separate periods: from 1295 to 1832, and from 1885 to 1918. Appleby was enfranchised as parliamentary borough in 1295, and abolished by the Great Reform Act of 1832. It returned two Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Members of Parliament (MPs) using the Plurality-at-large voting, bloc vote system. It was represented in the House of Commons of England until Acts of Union 1707, 1707, in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and finally in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. Its best-known MP was William Pitt the Younger who became Prime Minister of Great Britain, prime minister in 1783 at the age of 24. Sir Lancelot Sanderson
Sir Lancelot Sanderson (24 October 1863 – 9 March 1944) was a British Conservative politician and judge. A barrister of the Inner Temple, he was appointed Recorder of Wigan in 1901 and took silk in 1903. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Appleby division of Westmorland at the January 1910 general election, regaining a formerly Conservative seat which had been held by Liberal MPs since 1900. He was re-elected in the general election of December 1910, but resigned his seat and recordership in October 1915, when he was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature in Calcutta after Hon'ble Justice Lawrence Hugh Jenkins. Upon his resignation from that position in 1926, Sanderson was appointed to the Privy Council and sat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council from 1934 until 1935. Major-general (United Kingdom), Major General Sir (Henry) Cecil Lowther, (1 January 1869 – 1 November 1940) was a British general and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician, big-game hunter and adventurer. Career Born in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, he was the fourth son of William Lowther (diplomat), William Lowther.
