Norman Brookes
Sir Norman Everard Brookes (14 November 187728 September 1968) was an Australian tennis player. During his career he won three Grand Slam singles titles; Wimbledon in 1907 and 1914 (the first non-British born individual to do so) and the Australasian Championships in 1911. Brookes was part of the Australasian Davis Cup team that won the title on six occasions. The Australian Open men's singles trophy, the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, is named in his honour. After his active playing career Brookes became president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia. Early life Brookes was born in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda as the youngest son to Catherine Margaret (née Robinson) and William Brookes. John Flavelle
John Flavelle (1863–1947) was a British tennis player with a long career. Flavelle was a medical doctor. He was married to fellow player Helen Reckitt. According to A. Wallis Myers, John Flavelle travelled all over the world playing and watching tennis (which was unusual in that era). Of Flavelle's style of play, A. Wallis Myers (in his book Lawn Tennis At Home and Abroad in 1903) said "He is essentially a baseline player and, volleying only on the rarest of occasions and with a somewhat indifferent service, relies almost entirely on a low forehand drive on which he gets a lot of top." At his first Wimbledon in 1895, Flavelle lost in the quarter finals to Ernest Meers. At Wimbledon 1898 he lost in the quarterfinals to Laurence Doherty, though he did win a set. Ernest Pooley
Sir Ernest Henry Pooley, 1st Baronet GCVO (20 November 1876 – 13 February 1966) was a British barrister and arts administrator. Pooley was born on 20 November 1876 in Paddington, London. He was educated at Winchester College and Pembroke College, Cambridge and called to the bar in 1901. In 1905, he became a clerk to the Drapers Company for which he was knighted in 1932 and made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1943. From 1946 to 1953, he was Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain. He was created a baronet, of Westbrook House in the Parish of Tillington in the County of Sussex, in January 1953. Arthur William Charles Wentworth Gore (2 January 1868 – 1 December 1928) was a British tennis player. He is best known for winning three singles titles at the Wimbledon Championship and was runner-up a record 5 times (shared with Herbert Lawford). He also won gold medals at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, England, winning the Men's Indoor Singles and the Men's Indoor Doubles (with Herbert Barrett). Heinrich Kleinschroth (; 15 March 1890 – 10 January 1979) was an amateur German tennis player who found success in the early 20th century, mainly in doubles competitions. Otto Froitzheim
Otto Froitzheim (; 24 April 1884 – 27 October 1962) was a German tennis player. He won the singles and doubles titles at the World Hard Court Championships in 1912. He also won an Olympic Silver medal in singles in 1908 and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 1914. Biography Froitzheim was born in Strasbourg, then part of the German Empire, on 24 April 1884. His father worked as a teacher at the local lyceum, and his mother was the daughter of a doctor from the Rhineland. Edward Craig Biddle (October 24, 1879 – December 22, 1947) was an American male tennis player who was active in the second decade of the 20th century. Biography Craig was born into the Biddle family, a prominent Philadelphia family, the youngest son of Edward Biddle and Emma Drexel Biddle. His mother was the daughter of the wealthy Philadelphia financier Anthony Joseph Drexel (1826–1893). Major Josiah George Ritchie (18 October 1870 – 28 February 1955) was a tennis player from Great Britain. Major was his first name, not a military title. He was born in Westminster, educated at Brighton College and died in Ashford, Middlesex. Career Ritchie was a three-time medalist at the 1908 London Olympics, winning a Gold (Men's Singles), Silver (Men's Doubles) and Bronze (Men's Indoor Singles) medal.
