1914 SAFL Season
The 1914 South Australian Football League season was the 38th season of the top-level Australian rules football competition in South Australia. The season opened on 2 May with a match between South Adelaide and Port Adelaide, and concluded on 19 September with the Grand Final, in which minor premiers Port Adelaide went on to win its eighth premiership, defeating by 79 points. and also made the top four teams and participated in the finals series. West Adelaide, South Adelaide and all missed the top four. The 1914 South Australian Football League season is the only time in SAFA/SAFL/SANFL history a team has gone through the entire season winning every game. Port Adelaide Football Club is a professional Australian rules football club based in Alberton, South Australia, Alberton, South Australia. Alberton Oval
Alberton Oval is located in Alberton, a north-western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. The ground is a public park and is exclusively leased to the Port Adelaide Football Club for Australian rules football. History With the nearby Queenstown Oval built upon in 1876, the Alberton and Queenstown Council opted to construct a cricketing ground on the land adjacent Brougham Place in 1876. The land was donated by the former Mayor of Port Adelaide, John Formby. Jarryd Roughead
Jarryd Roughead (born 23 January 1987) is an Australian rules football coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach with the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the AFL and was the club's captain from 2017 until his retirement in 2019. Early and personal life Born in Leongatha in southern Gippsland, Roughead played for the Gippsland Power. A wooden spoon is an award that is given to an individual or team that has come last in a competition. Examples range from the academic to sporting and more frivolous events. Magarey Medal
The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipient is Aaron Young. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL). The sport at that time was known for often rough play, and Magarey wanted to help combat this, and help gain more respect for umpires. Harold Oliver (Australian Footballer)
William Harold Oliver (12 August 1891 – 15 November 1958) was an Australian rules footballer. Harold Oliver was a key player to some of South Australian football's most successful teams. He starred in South Australia's victorious 1911 Australian football championship along with Port Adelaide's 1914 "Invincibles" team. After being close to retiring from the game after World War I, he returned to captain both Port Adelaide to the 1921 SAFL premiership and South Australia in a game against Western Australia. Jack Londrigan
John William Londrigan (3 February 1890 – 22 August 1937) was an Australian rules football player from South Australia. Sturt (1907–1910) Initially Londrigan played for the Sturt Football Club but after strong rumours that University would soon be admitted to the SAFL, thereby eliminating the bye, he left the club. Adelaide University (1911) However, after it became apparent that University would not be admitted to the SAFL he left to join the Port Adelaide Football Club in 1912. Port Adelaide (1912–1914) Impressing in his first year he was appointed captain in 1912. Subsequently, he was captain of the 1913 and 1914 Port Adelaide Football Club side who were one of the sports greatest ever teams. Angelo Congear
Angelo Nicholas Goucar Congear (5 May 1885 – 9 August 1986) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League between 1908 and 1922. Junior football (1902–1908) Congear started playing football in 1902 with the Australs Football Club. In 1908 he started playing for Semaphore Centrals, an affiliate of the Port Adelaide Football Club who he would debut for later that year. Port Adelaide (1908–1922) Angelo Congear debuted in Port Adelaide's fifth match of the 1908 SAFL season against Norwood at Adelaide Oval. Norwood Football Club
Norwood Football Club, nicknamed the Redlegs, is an Australian rules football club competing in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) in the state of South Australia. Its home ground is Coopers Stadium (Norwood Oval), which is often referred to as "The Parade". West Torrens Football Club
West Torrens Football Club was an Australian rules football club that competed in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) from 1897 to 1990. In 1991, the club merged with neighbouring Woodville Football Club to form the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles. With the proposed introduction of representative Districts for clubs in the SAFA the Native Club in 1896 derived its name from Electoral district of West Torrens and based itself in the western suburbs of Adelaide, around the western reaches of the River Torrens. Sturt Football Club
The Sturt Football Club, nicknamed The Double Blues, is a semi-professional Australian rules football club based in the suburb of Unley, South Australia, which plays in the South Australian National Football League. Founded in 1901 by the Sturt Cricket Club, the club initially struggled to make the finals, however, in 1915 they won their first Premiership.
