1914 Pittsburgh Panthers Football Team
The 1914 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1914 college football season. In its second season under head coach Joseph Duff, the team compiled an 8–1 record and outscored all opponents by a total of 207 to 38. Joseph Duff
Joseph M. Duff Jr. (January 28, 1889 – October 10, 1918) was an All-American football player and coach who was killed in action during World War I. Duff graduated from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at Princeton University. He played guard for Princeton and was selected for Walter Camp's All-American eleven in 1911. After graduating from Princeton, Duff became an assistant football coach at the school for the 1912 football season, assisting head coach Logan Cunningham (coach), Logan Cunningham. He served as the football coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 1913 and 1914 and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, School of Law in 1915. He became a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Allegheny County Bar and went to work in the law firm of his brother James H. Duff. Jock Sutherland
John Bain Sutherland (March 21, 1889 – April 11, 1948) was an American football player and coach. He coached college football at Lafayette College (1919–1923) and the University of Pittsburgh (1924–1938) and professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1940–1941) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1946–1947). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951. Biography A native of Coupar Angus in Scotland, Sutherland got his start in football by playing end at the University of Pittsburgh, commonly known as Pitt, under legendary coach Glenn Scobey "Pop" Warner. Sutherland was named an All-American and played on Pitt's national championship teams in 1915 and 1916. Sutherland also played on Pitt's undefeated 1917 team. Jimmy DeHart
James DeHart (August 25, 1893 – March 4, 1935) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head coach at Washington and Lee University from 1922 to 1925 and again from 1931 to 1932 and at Duke University from 1926 to 1930, compiling a career college football record of 51–50–6. In 1935, he signed a contract to become the head coach at Southwestern University—now known as Rhodes College—in Memphis, Tennessee, but fell ill and died while relocating. Bob Peck (American Football)
Bob Peck (May 30, 1891 – June 14, 1932) was an American football player who most famously played center for the Pittsburgh Panthers, where he was a three-time All-American. Career Pitt Peck was a prominent center for "Pop" Warner's Pitt Panthers. He was selected as a first-team All-American in each of 1914, 1915, and 1916. Peck also won back-to-back national championships in 1915 and 1916. He dropped out of college during the spring of 1916 due to the death of his father, but he was able to academically qualify for the 1916 season – during which Peck served as team captain – by attending class throughout the summer. Pro ball In 1917 he played in the Ohio League, the direct predecessor to the modern National Football League for the Youngstown Patricians and the Massillon Tigers. Doc Carlson
Henry Clifford "Doc" Carlson (July 4, 1894 – November 1, 1964) was an American basketball coach and football player. He is a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee as the men's college basketball coach of his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, from 1922 to 1953. At Pitt he compiled a record of 367–247 record (.595). His 1927–28 team finished the season with a 21–0 record and was retroactively named the national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll; Carlson's Panthers would receive retroactive recognition as the Helms national champion for the 1929–30 season as well. Charles Elliott "Andy" Hastings (January 24, 1893 – May 23, 1934), also known as "Sandy Hastings" in professional football records, was an American football player. He was an All-American halfback for the Pittsburgh Panthers and remains one of Pittsburgh's all-time leading scorers with 255 points. Biography A native of Brookville, Pennsylvania, Hastings began his football career at The Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania. He next enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh where he played at the halfback position from 1914 to 1916 and in 1919. Hastings was selected as a second-team All-American in 1915 and a first-team All-American in 1916. Albert Hayes Sharpe (October 7, 1877 – May 17, 1966) was an All-American football player, coach and athletic director and medical doctor. He played football for Yale University and was selected as a halfback for the 1899 College Football All-America Team. Sharpe was also a star basketball player in the early years of the college game. Sharpe also excelled in baseball, gymnastics, rowing and track. In 1915, Sharpe was selected by one sporting expert as the greatest living athlete in the United States.
