1913 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1913 Auckland Rugby League season was the 5th season of the Auckland Rugby league. The first grade competition began on 3 May with the same 6 teams that had competed in the 1912 season, however Manukau Rovers pulled out of the competition midway through the season as they struggled to put a full team on the field. The Eden Ramblers also pulled out at the same time. North Shore Albions were crowned champions for the first time. Other clubs competing in lower grades were Otahuhu, Northcote Ramblers now known as the Northcote Tigers, and Ellerslie Wanderers, who later became known as the Ellerslie Eagles. A match was also played between Avondale and New Lynn in Avondale on 13 September. The match was won by New Lynn by 23 points to 8. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Club competitions Auckland's premier competition is the Fox Memorial Shield. This has been contested since 1910. Ronald MacDonald was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand between 1909 and 1911. Arthur Carlaw
Arthur Carlaw was a New Zealand rugby league player who played a role in the establishment of the sport in New Zealand and represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand. His uncle, James Carlaw, James, was an administrator in the sport and Carlaw Park was named after him and his brother William served with the New Zealand Rugby Leaque Football Council. Playing career Carlaw was involved in the formation of the Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby United club in August 1908, the first rugby league club to be formed in Auckland. The club played a series of matches against loosely organised teams. The Auckland Rugby League was formed on 19 July 1909 and Carlaw was part of the organisation's first sanctioned match, captaining a City combination against the North Shore Albions, North Shore. Harry Fricker
Harry Fricker was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who was one of the founding players of the Ponsonby United team. He represented Auckland from 1910 to 1914. He fought in World War I and was injured in battle. Early years Harry Fricker originally played rugby for the Ponsonby District Football Club and was a junior representative player while there. He was a house decorator by trade and worked in partnership with his brother. Rugby league In 1910 he switched to rugby league as part of a large group of players from the Ponsonby club who changed codes at the same time. He played for the Ponsonby United club who had recently formed. He was selected for the Auckland team which played against Great Britain at Victoria Park on 23 July 1910 and went on tour with the side on their seven match tour of New Zealand playing 7 matches in all in that season. Thomas McClymont
Thomas Allen "Scotty" McClymont (5 January 1892 – 18 December 1974) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s, and coached in the 1920s through to the 1950s. He represented New Zealand. Early years Thomas McClymont was born in Karangahake. McClymont represented the Goldfields sub-union in rugby union. Joe Bennett (rugby League)
Edward Joseph Bennett (14 October 1883 – 9 May 1965) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer. Bennett played in the second row position. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in two test matches against England in 1920. In the process he became the 144th player to represent New Zealand. He also played for the Waiuku rugby club, and the Newton Rangers, and Grafton Athletic rugby league clubs. Bennett also represented the Auckland and North Island rugby league teams. George Seagar
George Seagar was a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. His younger brother Allan Seagar also represented New Zealand at rugby league. Rugby League Playing career and Rowing George Seagar was a boiler maker by trade, living in Devonport on Auckland's North Shore. Seagar was one of the first rugby league footballers in New Zealand, representing Auckland against Taranaki in 1909. In 1909 he joined the North Shore Albions club as a founding player and also served on the Auckland Rugby League's management committee. Seagar played for both Auckland and New Zealand against the touring Great Britain Lions.
