1911 Pittsburgh Panthers Football Team
The 1911 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1911 college football season. In its third season under head coach Joseph H. Thompson, the team compiled a 4–3–1 record and outscored opponents by a total of 72 to 29. Schedule Preseason At the 1910 season year end banquet, Jack Lindsay was elected captain for the 1911 season and Joseph Trees, former WUP football player and noted alumnus, donated two hundred thousand dollars for a gymnasium and athletic field. Coach Thompson immediately proposed the field be named Trees Stadium. To prepare for the 1911 season Coach Thompson started fall practice on September 14. Robert "Tex" William Richards Jr. (August 9, 1889 – November 7, 1918) was an American college football player on the University of Pittsburgh Panthers team from 1907 to 1910. He was the captain and fullback of the undefeated and unscored-upon 1910 Pittsburgh Panthers football team, coached by Joseph H. Thompson, and considered by many to be that season's national champion. Early years Richards was the son of Robert William Richards Sr. and Hannah Sarah Richards. Robert Sr., an American of Welsh descent, was a traveling bookseller in the Pacific Rim in the 1880s, when he met a Melbourne school teacher, Hannah Sarah Harrex. They were married in 1888. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus ( ; la, Ianvs ) is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. James Francis Thorpe ( Sac and Fox (Sauk): ''Wa-Tho-Huk'', translated as "Bright Path"; May 22 or 28, 1887March 28, 1953) was an American athlete and Olympic gold medalist. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Thorpe was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States in the Olympics. Glenn Scobey Warner (April 5, 1871 – September 7, 1954), most commonly known as Pop Warner, was an American college football coach at various institutions who is responsible for several key aspects of the modern game. Included among his innovations are the single and double wing formations (precursors of the modern spread and shotgun formations), the three point stance and the body blocking technique. Fellow pioneer coach Amos Alonzo Stagg called Warner "one of the excellent creators". He was inducted as a coach into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1951.
