1911 Keighley By-election
The Keighley by-election was a Parliamentary by-election held on 27 October 1911. The constituency returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post voting system. Vacancy The vacancy was caused by the death on 30 September 1911 of Sir John Brigg, who had been the Liberal MP for Keighley since 1895. Electoral history Candidates *The Liberals chose 50 year-old Stanley Buckmaster to defend a seat the party had held since it was created in 1885. He had been Liberal MP for Cambridge until his defeat in January 1910. He had failed to regain Cambridge in December 1910. *The Conservative candidate was 60 year-old William Mitchell Acworth who had contested the seat as a Liberal Unionist in 1906 and January 1910, but did not contest the December 1910 elections. *Although a Socialist had stood here in 1906 and finished third, the Labour party had not contested the seat before. Keighley (UK Parliament Constituency)
Keighley is a constituency in West Yorkshire created in 1885 represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Robbie Moore of the Conservative Party. Since 1959, the seat has been a bellwether (its winner affiliated to the winning party nationally), with two exceptions: in 1979 and 2017, the seat leant to the left, bucking the national result. Keighley is one of 9 seats won (held or gained) by a Conservative candidate in 2019 from a total of 22 covering its county. Moore's 2019 win was one of 47 net gains by the Conservative Party. The seat has been considered – relative to others – a marginal seat, as well as a swing seat, since 2005, as its winner's majority has not exceeded 6.2% of the vote since the 10.5% majority won in 2005, and the seat has changed hands three times since that year. Independent Labour Party
The Independent Labour Party (ILP) was a British political party of the left, established in 1893 at a conference in Bradford, after local and national dissatisfaction with the Liberals' apparent reluctance to endorse working-class candidates, representing the interests of the majority. A sitting independent MP and prominent union organiser, Keir Hardie, became its first chairman. The party was positioned to the left of Ramsay MacDonald's Labour Representation Committee, which was founded in 1900 and soon renamed the Labour Party, and to which the ILP was affiliated from 1906 to 1932. Keighley ( ) is a market town and a civil parish in the City of Bradford Borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is the second largest settlement in the borough, after Bradford. Keighley is north-west of Bradford city centre, north-west of Bingley, north of Halifax and south-east of Skipton. It is governed by Keighley Town Council and Bradford City Council. William Bland (politician)
William Bland (died 1945) was a British people, British politician and trade unionist. Bland worked as a joiner in Keighley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and was active in the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. He was an early member of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) and, through it, became active in the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party, serving as the secretary of the town's Labour Representation Committee (1900), Labour Representation Committee. Two weeks before the 1913 Keighley by-election was held, the ILP proposed that Bland should stand in it. While the Labour Party had not been planning to stand a candidate, it found that support for Bland among the local party was very high, and so agreed to endorse his candidature, despite concerns about poor organisation in the local party.
