Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Brita Bratland
Brita Bratland (12 October 1910 – 24 August 1975) was a Norwegian folk singer. She was born in Vinje, and was granddaughter of folk singer Margit Tveiten, and great-granddaughter of traditional singer Halvor Gugarden (1792–1879). Bratland learned most of her song repertoire from her grandmother during her childhood. She recorded 167 songs for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation NRK, an abbreviation of the Norwegian ''Norsk Rikskringkasting AS'', generally expressed in English as the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, is the Norwegian government-owned radio and television public broadcasting company, and the largest ..., starting from 1958. In 1910 Haakon VII serves his sixth year as King of Norway. On 1 February Wollert Konow takes over as Prime Minister after Gunnar Knudsen, who has held this position since 1908. The Parliament passes a resolution about universal suffrage for women in municipal elections on 30 April. In Finnmark the Kirkenes–Bjørnevatn Line opens this year, and the Bøkfjord Lighthouse outside Kirkenes is completed. The Norwegian Institute of Technology is opened in Trondheim, as well as the accociated Student Society in Trondheim. The factory Norsk Gjærde- og Metaldukfabrik is founded. Also the Solør Line between Flisa and Elverum opens this year. Several of the most difficult summits in Norway are first ascended in 1910. Jens Book-Jenssen
Jens Peter Book-Jenssen (14 November 1910 – 28 March 1999) was a Norwegian singer of popular music, songwriter, revue artist and theatre director. From his stage debut in the early 1930s, his career included radio and television work, recordings, and extensive touring. His career spanned more than sixty years, and he was the top selling record artist in Norway in the 20th century. Personal life Book-Jenssen was born in Bærum as the son of gardener Olaf Jenssen (1874–1949) and Pauline Book (1883–1962), who were born in Hamar and Stockholm respectively. He grew up at the farm Store Stabekk. He married Gerd Kværnberg in 1936. Book-Jenssen was often informally referred to as "Book'n" or "Booken" in the press. Career 1930s and 1940s He made his stage debut at Det Nye Teater in Oslo in 1933. As a revue artist he first performed on Scala Teater, and later on Chat Noir in Oslo. Christian Hartmann (3 June 1910 – 29 May 1985) was a Norwegian composer, born in Asker. Hartmann composed melodies to a number of songs, including Prøysen's " Musevisa", "Romjulsdrøm" and "Æille har et syskjenbÃ¥n pÃ¥ Gjøvik", and Skjæraasen's "Høstvise" and "Ã…tte øyne i hverandre".
