1909 University Of New Mexico Football Team
The 1909 University of New Mexico football team was an American football team that represented the University of New Mexico as an independent during the 1909 college football season. The team compiled a 4–2 record and outscored opponents by a total of 117 to 75. Walter R. Allen was the team captain. In September 1909, the school hired Sam P. McBirney as its head football coach. McBirnie was a resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who had coached an Oklahoma football team in 1908 and was regularly employed as a cashier at the Tulsa National Bank. After six weeks in Albuquerque, McBirnie returned to his home in Tulsa. Assistant coach Hamilton H. Conwell and Hugh J. Collins took over the coaching responsibilities for the final game of the season against New Mexico A&M. Rio Grande Rivalry (football)
The New Mexico–New Mexico State football rivalry, known as the Battle of I-25 and the Rio Grande Rivalry in all sports, is an annual football game between the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. It is called the Battle of I-25 because the two universities are located along Interstate 25 connecting Albuquerque and Las Cruces. In the entire history of the rivalry, the game has never been contested anywhere beside those two cities. Series history The rivalry between New Mexico's only two NCAA Division I institutions dates back to January 1, 1894 – eighteen years before New Mexico achieved statehood – when the schools met in a football contest in Albuquerque. The Arizona–New Mexico football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Arizona Wildcats and New Mexico Lobos. They have met 67 times on the football field. Arizona leads the series 44–20–3. Kit Carson Rifle From 1938 to 1990, the winner of the rivalry took ownership of the Kit Carson Rifle. The gun is a Springfield Model 1866 rifle that is rumored to have once belonged to the famous frontier scout, Kit Carson. Game scores from each game are carved into the stock of the rifle. Gamble Field was an outdoor sports stadium in the western United States, located on the campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder. It was the predecessor of Folsom Field. History Opened in 1901 on September 21, it was built via the efforts of the university's student body. The field was named after Judge Harry P. Gamble, a six-time (1891–96) football letterman and two-time captain. Seating capacity was initially limited to 1,000 via a wooden grandstand located on the western side of the field, the only side that had seating. The 1909 Colorado Silver and Gold football team was an American football team that represented the University of Colorado as a member of the Colorado Faculty Athletic Conference (CFAC) during the 1909 college football season. In its ninth season under head coach Fred Folsom, the team compiled a perfect 6–0 record (3–0 against CFAC members), won the conference championship, was unscored upon for the season, and outscored opponents by a total of 141 to 0. Colorado sustained a 21-game win streak that began on November 26, 1908, and ended on October 12, 1912. It remains the longest such streak in program history.
