The 1909 FA Cup Final was the final match of the 1908–09 FA Cup, the 38th season of England's premier club football cup competition. The match was played on 24 April 1909 at Crystal Palace, and was contested by Manchester United and Bristol City, both of the First Division. Manchester United won by a single goal, scored by Sandy Turnbull midway through the first half. This was the first of Manchester United's twelve FA Cup titles to date. 1908–09 FA Cup
The 1908–09 FA Cup was the 38th staging of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Manchester United won the competition for the first time, beating Bristol City 1–0 in the final at Crystal Palace, through a goal from Sandy Turnbull. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held at neutral venues until a winner was determined. Harry Moger
George Henry Moger (September 1878 – 16 June 1927) was an English association football, football goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper. Playing career Born in Southampton, Moger started his career with local side Forest Swifts, before joining Southampton St. Marys' main local rivals, Freemantle F.C., Freemantle in 1898. In 1899 he was suspended for two months due to his having played amateur football for Forest Swifts whilst registered as a professional with Freemantle. Robert Hardy (16 June 1885 – 13 July 1960) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Bristol City. Harry Clay
Henry A. Clay (29 January 1881 – 9 August 1964) was an English professional association football player in the years prior to the First World War. He made 310 appearances in the Football League and 32 appearances in the FA Cup for his only professional club, Bristol City. Career Born in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, he began his career with local hometown club Kimberley St Johns before Bristol City manager Sam Hollis signed him in November 1901 for Bristol City. Clay made his league debut for Bristol City v Chesterfield on 7 Dec 1901 and made 23 appearances as City finished 6th of 18 teams in the Second Division. Harold Halse
Harold James Halse (1 January 1886 – 25 March 1949) was an English football forward, who played most of his career for Manchester United and then for Chelsea. He was the first player to appear in three FA Cup finals for three clubs. He is also the highest scoring player in a Charity Shield match, having scored six goals in the 1911 edition for Manchester United. Career He was born in Stratford, London and started his football career as an amateur with Wanstead, Newportians, Barking Town and Clapton Orient, where he made two appearances with one goal in the Football League. Alexander Bell (20 October 1882 – 30 November 1934) was a association football, footballer who played as a wing half. His professional career was mostly spent in England, where he won trophies with Manchester United F.C., Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers F.C., Blackburn Rovers. Dick Duckworth (footballer, Born 1882)
Richard Hargreaves Duckworth (14 September 1882 – Q3 1965) was an English footballer who played as a wing half for Manchester United, with whom he won the Football League twice and the FA Cup once. Career Born in Manchester, he played for Smedley Road School and as a youth player for Harpurhey Wesleyan Juniors, Rossall Mission and Stretford.Dykes (1994), p. 116. His first professional contract was with Newton Heath Athletic, who paid him 7 shillings and sixpence a week. As a centre-forward, he scored twice against the Manchester United reserves, and he was signed by the club in October 1903. Billy Wedlock
William John Wedlock (28 October 1880 – 25 January 1965), also known as "Fatty" or the "India Rubber Man", was a footballer who played for Bristol City in 1900–01 and from 1905 until his retirement in 1921. Between 1901 and 1905 he played for Aberdare. He was a centre-half whose his short and stout stature belied his natural talent. He won 26 England caps between 1907 and 1914, his only rival for the centre-half position being Charlie Roberts of Manchester United, his opposite number in the 1909 FA Cup Final. The East End at Ashton Gate Stadium was named the Wedlock Stand in his honour, before being demolished in 2014 as part of the Ashton Gate Stadium redevelopment.
