1908 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. Men's and ladies' competitions were held on January 25–26 in Troppau, Austria-Hungary (modern-day Opava, Czech Republic). Opava (; german: Troppau, pl, Opawa) is a city in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 55,000 inhabitants. It lies on the river Opava. Pair Skating
Pair skating is a figure skating discipline defined by the International Skating Union (ISU) as "the skating of two persons in unison who perform their movements in such harmony with each other as to give the impression of genuine Pair Skating as compared with independent Single Skating".S&P/ID 2021, p. 109 The ISU also states that a pairs team consists of "one Woman and one Man". Pair skating, along with men's and women's single skating, has been an Olympic discipline since figure skating, the oldest Winter Olympic sport, was introduced at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The ISU World Figure Skating Championships introduced pair skating in 1908. Like the other disciplines, pair skating competitions consist of two segments, the short program and the free skating program. Alexander Fischer (figure Skater)
Alexander Fischer (russian: Александр Л. Фишер) was a Russian figure skater who competed in pair skating. He resided in Saint Petersburg. In 1908, Fischer and his partner, Lidia Popova, participated in the first ever World Pairs Figure Skating Championship and won the bronze medal, thus becoming the first Russian skaters to win a medal in pairs skating at World Championships. Elsa Rendschmidt
Elsa Rendschmidt (11 January 1886 – 9 October 1969) was a German figure skater and the first German woman to compete and win a medal at the Olympic Games. Rendschmidt won the silver medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics, the first Olympics to include a ladies' figure skating event. She competed in the first ladies' German nationals, which took place in 1911. She skated for the Berliner Schlittschuhclub and won the event, becoming Germany's first ladies' champion.
