1908 U.S. National Championships (tennis)
List of champions of the 1908 U.S. National Championships tennis tournament (now known as the US Open). The men's tournament was held from August 18 to August 29 on the outdoor grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The women's tournament was held from June 22 to June 27 on the outdoor grass courts at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 28th U.S. National Championships and the second Grand Slam tournament of the three played that year. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Newport Casino
The Newport Casino is an athletic complex and recreation center located at 180-200 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island in the Bellevue Avenue/Casino Historic District. Built in 1879–1881 by ''New York Herald'' publisher James Gordon Bennett, Jr., it was designed in the Shingle style by the newly formed firm of McKim, Mead & White. The Newport Casino was the firm's first major commission and helped to establish the firm's national reputation. Built as a social club, it included courts for both lawn tennis and court tennis, facilities for other games, such as squash and lawn bowling, club rooms for reading, socializing, card-playing, and billiards, shops, and a convertible theater and ballroom. It became a center of Newport's social life during the Gilded Age through the 1920s. 1908 Australasian Championships (tennis)
The 1908 Australasian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor grass courts in Sydney, Australia. The preliminary rounds were played at the Sydney Cricket Ground while the final took place on the Double Bay Grounds. It was the fourth edition of the Australasian Championships (now known as the Australian Open), the first held in Sydney and the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. It consisted of a men's singles and doubles event. Fred Alexander won the singles event and became the first non-Australasian to win the title. Louise Hammond Raymond (''née'' Hammond; December 29, 1886 – August 3, 1991) was an American tennis player. Career She reached the women's singles final of the 1910 U.S. National Championships which she lost to compatriot Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman in straight sets. She again reached the women's singles final in 1916 and this time was defeated by the Norwegian Molla Bjurstedt 0–6, 1–6 in 22 minutes. This was the shortest Grand Slam final in history. In 1909 she reached the finals of the women's doubles at the U.S. Indoor Championships. Marian "Miriam" Steever of Chicago, Illinois, was an amateur tennis player in the early part of the 20th century. Steever paired with Carrie Neely to reach the doubles final at the 1908 U.S. National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open). Carrie Neely
Carrie Neely (January 24, 1876 – November 29, 1938) was an American tennis player from the beginning of the 20th century. Biography Carrie Neely was educated at the Dearborn Seminary, Chicago. Tennis career In 1907, she reached the women's singles All Comer's final of the U.S. Women's National Championship, where she was beaten by Evelyn Sears. She also won the mixed doubles in 1898, and won the women's doubles on three occasions (1903, 1905 and 1907). At the tournament now known as the Cincinnati Masters, she reached the singles final in 1915, the semifinals in 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1912, and the quarterfinals in 1901 and 1916. She paired with Winona Closterman to win the doubles title in 1902 and 1903, and teamed with Closterman again in 1904 to reach the doubles final. She won the mixed doubles title with Nat Emerson in 1903, and paired with Kreigh Collins, also of Chicago, to reach the mixed doubles final in 1901.
