1908 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1908 municipal election was held December 14, 1908 for the purpose of electing a mayor and six aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, as well as three public school trustees and five separate school trustees. There were also five proposed bylaws put to a vote of the electorate concurrently with the election. Positions to be elected There were eight aldermen on city council, but two of the positions were already filled: George S. Armstrong and Robert Manson had been elected to two-year terms in 1907 and were still in office. Robert Lee and Thomas Bellamy had also been elected to two-year terms in 1907, but had resigned to run for mayor. Accordingly, the fifth and sixth-place finishers in the aldermanic race - Andrew Agar and Daniel Fraser - were elected to one-year terms. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. In the 2010 election, Edmonton was divided into 12 wards each electing one councillor. Herman McInnes
Herman Lewis McInnes (also Hermon McInnes or Herman McInnis) (October 13, 1862 – July 16, 1923) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Herman McInnes was born in Saint John, New Brunswick and educated in Fredericton. He worked as a druggist for five years in that city and in Winnipeg after graduating high school. He studied medicine at the Manitoba Medical College — now part of the University of Manitoba - from which he graduated in 1886. He served as an assistant surgeon during the North-West Rebellion. He came to Edmonton in 1886 and took up the practice of medicine before going to Europe for further study from 1889 until 1892. He resumed his practice upon his return and also founded McInnes Lumber Company in 1902. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons. Prosper-Edmond Lessard
Prosper-Edmond Lessard (February 3, 1873 – April 11, 1931) was a Canadian businessman, militia officer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1921 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 1925 to his death in 1931 sitting with the federal Liberal caucus. Early life Lessard was born on February 3, 1873 in Cranbourne, Quebec to Jean-Prosper Lessard and Annie Campbell Davidson. Lessard studied commerce and sciences at Collège du Mont-Saint-Louis in the mid-1890s and worked as a bookkeeper in Montreal following the completion of his studies. He left home seeking his fortune in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, stopping in Edmonton on his way there and went on to become a leading citizen in the Franco-Albertan community. William Harold Clark (July 1, 1869 – December 24, 1913) was an English-born Canadian businessman and politician. He was a municipal councillor in Edmonton, Alberta. Biography William Clark was born in London, England on July 1, 1869. After being educated in London's public schools, he went to work for his father at age sixteen in the building and contracting business. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1889 and on to Edmonton in 1895. In Edmonton, he founded W. H. Clark & Company, which produced sash, doors, and interior furnishings. In this capacity, he did the millwork for many significant buildings, including the Civic Block, the medical building at the University of Alberta, and several hospital units. Cameron Anderson
Cameron Anderson (May 1857 – March 22, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Anderson came to Edmonton prior to 1901 from North Dakota. Anderson was a long-time Edmonton resident and a building contractor. In the 1906 municipal election he was elected to a two-year term on Edmonton City Council as an alderman, placing fourth of twelve candidates. James Henry McKinley (June 17, 1877 – August 25, 1954) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. He was born in Lanark County, Ontario on June 17, 1877 to William Henry McKinley and Jessie Burns. He married Agnes Mary Barr.1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta He came to Edmonton in 1903 and opened the undertaking firm Connolly & McKinley in 1908. John Egbert Lundy (September 18, 1872 – October 13, 1949) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Lundy was born in Halton County, Ontario. He went to high school in Brampton, and upon graduation worked in wholesale and retail hardware in Guelph. He came west during the Klondike Gold Rush, and eventually came to Edmonton to work for the Ross Brothers hardware firm, which was co-owned by city alderman James Ross. Wilfrid Gariepy (March 14, 1877 – January 13, 1960) was a Canadian politician, member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and provincial cabinet minister, member of the House of Commons of Canada, and municipal councillor in Edmonton. Early life Wilfrid Gariépy was born in Montreal, Quebec on March 14, 1877 born to parents Joseph Gariépy and Etudienne Boissoneault. He graduated high school from St-Laurent College and came to Edmonton with his family in 1893. Shortly after he returned to Montreal for university, earning a B.A. from Université Laval in 1899 and a B.C.L. from McGill University in 1902. He married Albertina Lessard, with whom he would have four children. He was admitted to the Alberta bar the same year and began work with the firm Taylor, Boyle & Gariépy.
