1908 Cuban General Election
General elections were held in Cuba on 14 November 1908.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p203 José Miguel Gómez won the presidential election running under the Liberal Coalition banner (an alliance of the Historical Liberal Party and the Zayista Liberal Party), whilst the coalition emerged as the largest faction in the House of Representatives, winning 49 of the 83 seats. Voter turnout was 71.0%. Of the population of just over two million, less than half a million people were registered to vote. José Miguel Gómez
JosĂ© Miguel GĂłmez y Arias (6 July 1858 – 13 June 1921) was a Cuban politician and revolutionary who was one of the leaders of the rebel forces in the Cuban War of Independence. He later served as President of Cuba from 1909 to 1913. Early career At the Constitutional Convention, GĂłmez was one of those who voted in favor of adopting the Platt Amendment. Born in Sancti SpĂritus, in the former Las Villas Province, GĂłmez went on to govern Santa Clara and became quite popular in Cuba. In 1905, GĂłmez planned to run for the presidency with Alfredo Zayas on behalf of the Liberals. Violence prevented the Liberals from winning much in the election so GĂłmez dropped out of the running. GĂłmez and Zayas began to split the Liberal party. A strong showing by the Conservatives against the divided Liberals convinced them to rejoin. Aurelio Mario Gabriel Francisco GarcĂa Menocal y Deop (December 17, 1866 – September 7, 1941) was the 3rd President of Cuba, serving from 1913 to 1921. His term as president saw Cuba's participation in World War I. Youth Born in JagĂĽey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba, GarcĂa Menocal was thirteen when he was sent to boarding schools in the United States, first at the Chappaqua Mountain Institute in New York, and later at the Maryland Agricultural College. In 1884, he then went to Cornell University where he graduated in 1888 from the School of Engineering. While at Cornell University, he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Delta Chi Chapter). As a young man he was involved in Cuba's fight for independence from Spain.
