1908 Colorado Silver And Gold Football Team
The 1908 Colorado Silver and Gold football team was an American football team that represented the University of Colorado as a member of the Colorado Football Association (CFA) during the 1908 college football season. Fred Folsom, who had left Colorado to coach at Dartmouth College from 1903 to 1907, returned as the team's head coach for his third stint and eighth overall season. Under Folsom's guidance, the team compiled an overall record of 5–2 record with a mark of 3–1 in conference playing, placing second in the CFA. Colorado outscored its opponents by a total of 96 to 35. The Colorado Football Association or Colorado Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was one of the earliest college football conferences in the United States, with its membership centered on the state of Colorado. The league existed from 1890 to 1908. After folding in 1908, all of its members subsequently founded the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which remains in existence today as a Division II conference. Robert Rice Stadium was an outdoor athletic stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, located on the campus of the University of Utah. Originally opened in 1927 as Ute Stadium, it was the home of the Utah Utes football team. Renamed for Robert L. Rice in 1972, it was almost completely demolished after the 1997 season to make way for the Utes' current home, Rice-Eccles Stadium, which occupies the same physical footprint. History After a record crowd came to the Utes' previous home, Cummings Field, to see Utah play Utah State on Thanksgiving Day 1926, a drive began for a larger and more modern stadium. The Rocky Mountain Showdown is the name given to the Colorado–Colorado State football rivalry. It is an American college football intrastate rivalry between the University of Colorado Buffaloes and the Colorado State University Rams; the winner of the game receives the Centennial Cup. It began in 1893 and was played annually from 1899 to 1958, except for 1901, 1905, and 1943–44. Fred Gorham Folsom (November 9, 1873 – November 11, 1944) was an American football player, coach of football and baseball, lawyer, and law professor. He served as the head football coach at the University of Colorado Boulder (1895–1899, 1901–1902, 1908–1915) and at Dartmouth College from (1903–1906), compiling a career college football record of 106–28–6.
