Alfonso XIII
Alfonso XIII (17 May 1886 – 28 February 1941), also known as El Africano or the African, was King of Spain from 17 May 1886 to 14 April 1931, when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. He was a monarch from birth as his father, Alfonso XII, had died the previous year. Alfonso's mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as regent until he assumed full powers on his sixteenth birthday in 1902. Alfonso XIII's upbringing and public image were closely linked to the military estate, often presenting himself as a soldier-king. His effective reign started four years after the so-called 1898 Disaster, with various social factions projecting their expectations of national regeneration upon him. Antonio Maura Montaner
Antonio Maura Montaner (2 May 1853 – 13 December 1925) was Prime Minister of Spain on five separate occasions. Early life Maura was born in Palma, on the island of Mallorca, and studied law in Madrid. In 1878, Maura married Constancia Gamazo y Calvo, the sister of Germán Gamazo. They had several sons and a daughter together, many of whom have been prominent in Spanish and European history. Political career He entered the '' Cortes Generales'' in 1881 as a Liberal delegate for Majorca but later joined the Conservative Party. In 1886, Maura was elected vice president of the Congress of Deputies. As prime minister, he created the Spanish Institute of Provision and attempted to carry out a reform plan, but it was opposed by the liberals. He fell from power after his suppression of an uprising in Barcelona in 1909, called the Tragic Week. Luis Gabriel Portillo Pérez (18 March 1907 – 19 October 1993) was a Spanish professor, left-wing politician and writer who lived in exile in the United Kingdom. Early life and career Luis Gabriel Portillo was born in Gimialcón (Ávila, Spain) to Justino Portillo, a medical doctor, and his wife Ana María Pérez. His family moved in 1909 to Madrigal de las Altas Torres, also in Ávila. He studied in Salamanca and Madrid, becoming a professor of civil law at the University of Salamanca in 1934, where he befriended Miguel de Unamuno, the rector of the university. He became Deputy Secretary of Justice during the Second Spanish Republic. Emilio Sánchez Perrier
Emilio Sánchez Perrier (1855-1907) was a Spanish landscape painter and watercolorist who also painted Orientalist subjects. Life and career Perrier was born in Seville on 15 October 1855. His father, Manuel Sanchez, ran a watchmaking shop in the Calle Sierpes. His father taught him watchmaking, but Perrier was interested in art and became a painter of landscapes and orientalist scenes, often in watercolor. He began to study under Eduardo Cano de la Peja and Joaquin Dominguez Bécquer about 1868, at the age of 13, in Seville at Alcalá de Guadaira. He was among a circle of artists led by Manuel Ussel de Guimbarda at Seville. In 1871, he resided in Granada, where he befriended Mariano Fortuny. He studied under Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano at the School of Fine Arts in Granada. He studied under Carlos de Haes at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
