1907 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1907 municipal election was held December 9, 1907, for the purpose of electing a mayor and five aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, Alberta, Canada as well as five public school trustees and six separate school trustees. There were also four proposed bylaws put to a vote of the electorate concurrently with the election. Positions to be elected There were eight aldermen on city council, but three of the positions were already filled: Cameron Anderson and Wilfrid Gariépy had been elected to two-year terms in 1906, and were still in office. James Walker had also been elected to a two-year term, but resigned, and had been replaced by Daniel Fraser, who was also still in office. Thomas Daly had been elected to a two-year term in 1906, but resigned and hadn't been replaced. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. In the 2010 election, Edmonton was divided into 12 wards each electing one councillor. The ''Edmonton Journal'' is a daily newspaper in Edmonton, Alberta. It is part of the Postmedia Network. History The ''Journal'' was founded in 1903 by three local businessmen — John Macpherson, Arthur Moore and J.W. Cunningham — as a rival to Alberta's first newspaper, the 23-year-old ''Edmonton Bulletin''. Within a week, the ''Journal'' took over another newspaper, ''The Edmonton Post'', and established an editorial policy supporting the Conservative Party of Canada (historical), Conservative Party against the ''Bulletins stance for the Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal Party. In 1912, the ''Journal'' was sold to the William Southam, Southam family. It remained under Southam ownership until 1996, when it was acquired by Hollinger International. Prosper-Edmond Lessard
Prosper-Edmond Lessard (February 3, 1873 – April 11, 1931) was a Canadian businessman, militia officer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1921 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 1925 to his death in 1931 sitting with the federal Liberal caucus. Early life Lessard was born on February 3, 1873 in Cranbourne, Quebec to Jean-Prosper Lessard and Annie Campbell Davidson. Lessard studied commerce and sciences at Collège du Mont-Saint-Louis in the mid-1890s and worked as a bookkeeper in Montreal following the completion of his studies. He left home seeking his fortune in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, stopping in Edmonton on his way there and went on to become a leading citizen in the Franco-Albertan community. Alex Taylor (businessman)
Alexander Taylor (May 17, 1853 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian entrepreneur, inventor and politician. He is credited as being one of the founders of the city of Edmonton. Taylor was born in on May 17, 1853, in Ottawa, Ontario, and came to Edmonton in 1877. Shortly after his arrival in Edmonton, Taylor established the first telegraph, telephone, and electricity systems. Taylor asked the Bell Telephone Company to provide services in 1883. Alex Taylor, Dominion Telegraph Agent, brought the first two telephones made of Spanish mahogany, and asked store owner Henry William McKenney of St. Albert to keep the device in St. Albert. Taylor, who, at the time was working for the Dominion Telegraph and Signal Service proposed running a telephone line from his office to St. Albert, Alberta. Cornelius Gallagher (Canadian Politician)
Cornelius Gallagher (December 31, 1854 – October 27, 1932) was a meat merchant and politician in Alberta, Canada. He served as a municipal councillor and briefly as the third mayor of Edmonton. Gallagher was born in New Brunswick in 1854, the son of an Irish immigrant father. After attending the schools of his birthplace, he moved west to Winnipeg with his family, and became involved in the family meat packing business, established by his father. He would soon move west again to what would later become the province of Saskatchewan, where he would continue his business, providing his product to the local police establishments and soldiers during the North-West Rebellion. After his contracts expired there, Gallagher would move again further west, to Edmonton, where he would permanently settle. John Coleman Calhoun
John Coleman Calhoun (March 1871 – September 28, 1950) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Calhoun was born in 1871 in Albert County, New Brunswick, where he remained until he moved to British Columbia in 1885. He stayed there for ten years before moving to Alberta to engage in ranching and fur trading. He moved to Edmonton in 1895 where he worked in real estate and horse trading. In 1906, he built the King Edward Hotel, which would become Edmonton's leading hotel after a 1910 expansion. Calhoun made his first bid for elected office in the 1905 election, when finished ninth out of ten candidates for alderman, thus missing out on any of the four seats available. However, on May 7, 1906, John R. Boyle resigned from Edmonton City Council, and Calhoun was elected to finish his term (which ran until December of that year). Herman McInnes
Herman Lewis McInnes (also Hermon McInnes or Herman McInnis) (October 13, 1862 – July 16, 1923) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Herman McInnes was born in Saint John, New Brunswick and educated in Fredericton. He worked as a druggist for five years in that city and in Winnipeg after graduating high school. He studied medicine at the Manitoba Medical College — now part of the University of Manitoba - from which he graduated in 1886. He served as an assistant surgeon during the North-West Rebellion. He came to Edmonton in 1886 and took up the practice of medicine before going to Europe for further study from 1889 until 1892. He resumed his practice upon his return and also founded McInnes Lumber Company in 1902. Robert Lee (March 10, 1862 – August 5, 1925) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a mayor of Edmonton. Biography Lee was born in Lanark County, Ontario on March 10, 1862 and graduated from the Dominion Business College in Kingston. He married Annette Wilson, with whom he had a daughter and two sons, in 1897. He served as a member of the Lanark City Council from 1892 until 1898, after which he moved to Edmonton. He was in partnership with John Ross in grain trading, insurance, and loans under the name Ross & Lee until 1902, after which he partnered with W I Crafts in real estate, timber, and coal mining under the name Crafts & Lee (another partner was admitted in 1905 as they became Crafts, Lee & Gallinger). Robert Manson
Robert John Manson (1866 or 1867 – May 10, 1932) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton, 1906-1909. Biography Manson came to Edmonton from Renfrew County, Ontario in 1891. He fast became one of the city's leading contractors, and was responsible for the creation of buildings including the Alberta Hotel and the MacKay Avenue school. He was also a director of the Edmonton Brick Co. and the Sand-lime Brick Co. He first sought political office during the 1905 municipal election, when he ran for and was elected alderman on Edmonton City Council, finishing second of eleven candidates. He won re-election in the 1907 election, finishing first of twelve candidates. Edmonton Bulletin
The ''Edmonton Bulletin'' was a newspaper in Edmonton, Alberta, published from 1880 until January 20, 1951. It was founded by Edmonton pioneer Frank Oliver, a future Liberal politician and cabinet minister in the Canadian Government. Oliver co-founded the paper with Alex Taylor, the city's first telegraph operator, in 1880. It was Edmonton's undisputed foremost newspaper until the ''Edmonton Journal'' was founded in 1903.
