The 1906 Western University of Pennsylvania football team was an American football team that represented Western University of Pennsylvania (later renamed the University of Pittsburgh) as an independent during the 1906 college football season. Schedule Season recap The 1905 Western University of Pennsylvania football season was successful record-wise and financially. The Arthur Mosse led team finished the season with an 11–2 record. Its only losses were to Eastern powers Cornell and State College. But two days after the State College defeat newspapers from Philadelphia, Pa. to South Bend, Indiana had headlines describing trouble within the Western University football team. The feud between Coach Mosse and Joe Thompson for control of the team that started at the conclusion of the 1904 season was not settled as satisfactorily as people were led to believe. Edgar Wingard
Edgar Ramey Wingard (September 21, 1878 – July 31, 1927) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at seven different schools: Ohio Northern University (1903), Butler University (1904–1905), Western University of Pennsylvania—now known as the University of Pittsburgh (1906), Louisiana State University (1907–1908), the University of Maine (1910–1911), Susquehanna University (1916–1917, 1919, 1924–1925), and Bucknell University (1918), compiling a career record of 74–38–6. In 1908, Wingard led his 1908 LSU Tigers football team, LSU team to a record of 10–0. The team has been recognized as a College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national champion by the National Championship Foundation, although LSU does not officially claim a national title that season.
