1905 Yale Bulldogs Football Team
The 1905 Yale Bulldogs football team was an American football that represented Yale University as an independent during the 1905 college football season. The team finished with a 10–0 record, shut out nine of ten opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 227 to 4. Jack Owsley was the head coach, and Tom Shevlin was the team captain. There was no contemporaneous system in 1905 for determining a national champion. However, Yale was retroactively named as the national champion by Caspar Whitney and Parke H. Davis. Four Yale players were selected as consensus first-team players on the 1905 All-America team. The team's consensus All-Americans were: quarterback Guy Hutchinson, halfback Howard Roome, end Tom Shevlin, and guard Roswell Tripp. Other key players included halfback Samuel F. B. Jack Owsley
John Ebsworth Owsley (March 17, 1883 – July 14, 1953) was an American football player and coach and businessman. He played college football, principally as a left halfback, for Yale University from 1901 to 1904. He was the head coach of Yale's undefeated 1905 football team that outscored opponents 226 to 4. He also served as the head football coach at the United States Naval Academy in 1925. He gained a reputation as a wartime producer of armaments, working with Marlin-Rockwell Corporation during World War I and with the High Standard Manufacturing Company during World War II. He was one of the highest paid persons in the United States in 1941 and 1942. Early years Owsley was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1883. Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds was the name of three stadiums in Upper Manhattan, New York City, used mainly for professional baseball and American football from 1880 through 1963. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue.
