Ira Johnson
Ira Branch Johnson (September 17, 1880 – November 30, 1950) was an American college football player and coach. He was the seventh head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, serving for two seasons, from 1905 to 1906, and compiling a record of 6–9–1. During World War I, Johnson served as Captain, Battery C, 111th Field Artillery, 29th Division, prior to his discharge on June 11, 1918. He later worked as an assistant superintendent at the assembly plant in the Bartlett-Hayward industrial complex, an important Baltimore manufacturer. At the time of his death, he was a municipal judge in Richmond, Virginia. He was married at least twice, to Mary Louise Herbert in 1906 and later to Jeanne Boutin.Virginia, Deaths, 1912–2014. 1905 College Football Season
The 1905 college football season had the Chicago Maroons retroactively named as national champion by the Billingsley Report, the Helms Athletic Foundation, the National Championship Foundation, and the Houlgate System, while Yale was named champion by Parke H. Davis and Caspar Whitney. Chicago finished the season 11–0, while Yale finished 10–0. The ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listed both Chicago and Yale as having been selected national champions. VMI–Virginia Tech Football Rivalry
The VMI–Virginia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute and the Hokies of Virginia Tech (formerly known as the Virginia Polytechnic Institute "Fighting Gobblers"). The teams first played in 1894 and last played in 1984. They are scheduled to meet again in 2026, after a 42-year hiatus. The two schools are only about 80 miles apart in western Virginia and were in the same conference (the Southern Conference) from 1924 to 1964. 1905 VPI Football Team
The 1905 VPI football team represented the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the 1905 college football season. Led by first-year head coach Sally Miles, the team went 9–1 and claims a Southern championship. The VMI–William & Mary football rivalry between the VMI Keydets and the William & Mary Tribe is a match-up between two historic public universities, the Virginia Military Institute and the College of William and Mary, in the state of Virginia.
