The 1905 Northwestern Purple football team represented Northwestern University during the 1905 Western Conference football season. Walter McCornack, in his third season at Northwestern, was the team's head coach. Jimmy Johnson (quarterback)
James E. Johnson (June 6, 1879 – January 19, 1942) was an American football player. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969. Biography Johnson was born on June 6, 1879 in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Johnson, one-half Stockbridge Indian, attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School from 1899 to 1903, where he starred on the Carlisle football team. Coached by Pop Warner, the team was composed entirely of American Indian students and was a true national powerhouse in the early 20th century. In 1903, Walter Camp named Johnson as the All-American quarterback. Johnson also served as Carlisle's team captain in the same season. Following his career at Carlisle, Johnson enrolled in Northwestern's Dental School and played on the football team during the 1904 and 1905 seasons, also becoming a team captain for Northwestern and leading the team to success despite a depleted roster. Northrop Field
Northrop Field was the on-campus stadium of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team from 1899 to 1923. The original field had seating of around 3,000 and was named for University President Cyrus Northrop. After the 1902 season, the playing field was moved and new seating was added that allowed for crowds of up to 20,000. The stadium was sometimes referred to as Greater Northrop Field after 1902. In 1903, the first season at the enlarged field, the Gophers played the Michigan Wolverines in the first Little Brown Jug game. The stadium continued on as the football team's home until the end of the 1923 season. The U of M then built Memorial Stadium and moved there in 1924. The 1905 Chicago Maroons football team was an American football team that represented the University of Chicago during the 1905 Western Conference football season. In coach Amos Alonzo Stagg's 14th year as head coach, the Maroons finished with an 11–0 record (7–0 against Western Conference opponents), shut out 10 of 11 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 271 to 5. Walter McCornack
Walter Edwin McCornack (January 22, 1875 – June 30, 1939) was an American football player, coach, and lawyer. He served as the head football coach at Dartmouth College from 1901 to 1902 and at Northwestern University from 1903 to 1905, compiling a career college football record of 41–8–5. McCornack's record at Northwestern was 26–5–4. His winning percentage of .800 is the highest in Northwestern Wildcats football program history.
