The Illinois Attorney General is the highest legal officer of the state of Illinois in the United States. Originally an appointed office, it is now an office filled by statewide election. Based in Chicago and Springfield, Illinois, the attorney general is responsible for providing legal counsel for the various state agencies including the Governor of Illinois and Illinois General Assembly, and conducting all legal affairs pertaining to the state. The office of the Illinois Attorney General was established on December 3, 1818, based on guidelines adopted by a state constitutional convention. The attorney general is second (behind the Lieutenant Governor) in the line of succession to the office of Governor of Illinois. Walter Reeves
Walter Reeves (September 25, 1848 – April 9, 1909) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois. Biography Walter Reeves was born near Brownsville, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1948. He moved with his parents to Illinois in 1856, where they settled upon a farm in La Salle County. He attended the public schools, and later taught school while studying law. He was admitted to the bar in Mount Vernon, Illinois, in 1875, and commenced practice in Streator, Illinois. Reeves was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1895 – March 3, 1903). He served as chairman of the Committee on Patents ( Fifty-seventh Congress). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1902. Vespasian Warner (April 23, 1842 – March 31, 1925) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois. Biography Born in Mount Pleasant (now Farmer City), De Witt County, Illinois, Warner moved with his parents to Clinton, Illinois, in 1843. He attended public schools in Clinton, and Lombard College in Galesburg, Illinois. He also studied law in Clinton. Enlisted as a private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, June 13, 1861.
