Stetson College
Stetson University is a private university with four colleges and schools located across the I–4 corridor in Central Florida with the primary undergraduate campus in DeLand. The university was founded in 1883 and was later established in 1887. In total, there are over 4,000 students currently enrolled at Stetson. History Stetson University was founded in 1883 and was first known as DeLand Academy, after the principal founder of the town, Henry Addison DeLand. In 1889, the name was changed to John B. Stetson University to honor the well-known hat manufacturer who made generous donations to Stetson. John B. Stetson was a benefactor to the university and served alongside Henry A. DeLand as a founding trustee. The first director of the academy was Dr. John H Griffith, a minister. When the college was founded, Dr. John Franklin Forbes took over as the first President. 1902 East Florida Seminary Football Team
The 1902 East Florida Seminary football team represented the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, Florida in the sport of American football during the 1902 college football season. The season consisted of a two-game series with Stetson, which had fielded one of the first intercollegiate football teams in Florida the previous year. The teams split the games, but the East Florida Seminary claimed a state championship because they scored more points in the series. Background The school had been established in 1853 and moved to Gainesville in 1866. Football squads from the East Florida Seminary played a limited slate of games starting in 1902 until 1904. In 1905, the school was consolidated along with Florida Agricultural College in Ocala along with two smaller schools to form the modern University of Florida per the Buckman Act. DeLand is a city in central Florida. It is the county seat of Volusia County. Stetson is a brand of hat manufactured by the John B. Stetson Company. "Stetson" is also used as a generic trademark to refer to any campaign hat, in particular, in Scouting. John B. Stetson gained inspiration for his most famous hats when he headed west from his native New Jersey for health reasons. On his return east in 1865, he founded the John B. Stetson Company in Philadelphia. He created a hat that has become symbolic of the pioneering American West, the "Boss of the Plains". This Western hat would become the cornerstone of Stetson's hat business and is still in production today.
