South Down (UK Parliament Constituency)
South Down is a parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom House of Commons. The current MP for the constituency is Chris Hazzard of Sinn Féin. Constituency profile The seat covers the Mourne Mountains, and Downpatrick to the north. It has a short border with the Republic to the south. The area voted to Remain in the EU. Boundaries The county constituency was first created in 1885 from the southern part of Down. It was defined as including 'The Baronies of – Iveagh Upper, Lower Half, Lordship of Newry, and Mourne, and so much of the Barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half, as comprises the Parishes of – Clonallan, Donaghmore, Drumgath, Kilbroney, and Warrenpoint.'. In 1918, it was redefined as including 'The rural district of Newry No. 1; the part of the rural district of Kilkeel which is not included in the East Down Division; and the urban districts of Newcastle, Newry and Warrenpoint.' Michael McCartan
Michael McCartan (1 January 1851 – 30 September 1902) was an Irish nationalist politician. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1886 to 1902. McCartan was born in Castlewellan, County Down, and educated at St. Malachy's College in Belfast and then Blackrock College. He became a solicitor in 1882. At the 1886 general election he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Down. He sat for the Irish Parliamentary Party until the split in 1890, when he joined the anti-Parnellite Irish National Federation The Irish National Federation (INF) was a nationalist political party in Ireland. The Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP; commonly called the Irish Party or the Home Rule Party) was formed in 1874 by Isaac Butt, the leader of the Nationalist Party, replacing the Home Rule League, as official parliamentary party for Irish nationalist Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to the House of Commons at Westminster within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland up until 1918. Its central objectives were legislative independence for Ireland and land reform. Jeremiah McVeagh
Jeremiah McVeagh (1870/73 – 17 April 1932) was an Irish nationalist politician and Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He was the son of Thomas McVeagh, shipowner, and was educated at St Malachy's College, Belfast, and at the Royal University of Ireland. A journalist and barrister by profession, in the 1890s, McVeagh was based in London, where he was active in the Irish National League of Great Britain. He was first elected as the Irish Parliamentary Party MP for the South Down constituency at the 19 February 1902 by-election, and was again re-elected at the 1906, January 1910, December 1910 and 1918 general elections, and served until 1922 as member of the Nationalist Party.
